Most people miss this part of turkey management...
Brooding Cover.
One of the most important factors in whether or not you have a good turkey population is the presence or absence of good brooding cover.
Most guys don't understand what really makes good brooding habitat so this graphic breaks it down.
A good rule of thumb: If your field is too thick to roll a softball through it, its too thick for poults.
If your fields are too thick, and most are, then the time to do something about it is late next winter. Burn, mow, or disc some areas to reset and thin out vegetation. It will be just right by the time brooding season arrives in late spring and your turkey survival should improve dramatically.
