One of my favorite exercises for developing softness and body awareness is what I cal...l

The Centerline Straddle

This exercise asks the horse to step forward while placing their feet on either side of a ground pole.

It encourages them to organize their body in a very intentional way, becoming more aware of their left and right sides, as well as their front end and hindquarters independently.

It's a great foundation for later work like yields, pivots, and more refined body control, because the horse starts to understand where each part of their body is in space.

The goal isn't to complete the exercise but rather encourage thoughtful, deliberate steps.

Over time, you will be rewarded with a horse that is more aware of their body, more willing to think, and softer in their responses.

Try it for yourself!!

Went to check out the mustangs at the BLM's Bitterroot Valley Wild Horse & B***o adoption event. Mustang Matt gave a first-class clinic, teaching everyone some great techniques when working with mustangs. I took notes!

Happy national horse day to all of my babies! I wouldn't be where I am today without all of them. I'm so lucky to have each one in my life. They all have taught me so much and each have taught me a different lesson.

Harley- my first horse after my pony. Taught me how to handle a moody mare and the love of competition. She has really been the start of my love for horses and she will always have a special place in my heart.

Angel- taught me that every horse is not the same. That some need time to trust you and when they do, they will give you everything. She is an absolute sweet heart that I can still hop on without a saddle, bridle, or halter and ride around the pasture.

Deeva- my first horse I started from a weanling. Where I halter broke, taught to ride, competitions, and now helping me break and train other horses. She gave me the confidence that horse training is possible. And maybe, gave me the false hope that it would be easy.

Galaxie- she's taught me patience, repetition, and having good consistent habits is key. She is the exact opposite of Deeva. She is still a struggle and we butt heads all the time but I know she will be a great horse one day with her athleticism and eagerness to please.

Amigo- he's my first gelding and we are still learning about each other. He is teaching me how to work with an already trained horse, trained in a way that is not fully correct to my expectations. He is teaching me to try different methods to get my teachings across and he already has come a long way. I can't wait to see how far he goes.

To all the other horses that I have come across in my life that I haven't individually mentioned but we're still a vital part of my life. Thank you. The different horses of my friends that I rode on whims, teaching me about horsemanship. The horses at Longhorn's ranch that gave me the bug for training. The horses I rode in college that I learned correct riding from. The horses at NDSU that aided me into getting my c**t starting certification. The horses that taught me responsibility and care at Clark quarter horses. Thank you.

I am truly grateful for my life thanks to all of them. Horses are good for the soul
