The Daily Log: Freya’s Field Notes
Location: Bitter Root Humane Association
Current Status: Sitting pretty, waiting for my forever mountain view
Day 4: Learning the Rhythm of the Valley
The views outside the play yard here are spectacular—big, beautiful mountains all around. But honestly, I’m much more focused on the action inside the fence.
The humans here are wonderful. They wear these blue shirts and move with absolute purpose. Today, one of them took me out to the big play yard for a socialization session. They told me I was doing so well with the other dogs thanks to some big training workshop they did a while back. I don’t know much about workshops, but I do know that playing chase with the hound next door is the absolute highlight of my morning. I showed off my signature "spin-and-pounce" move. I think the volunteers were impressed.
Day 12: The Bitterroot Breeze and the Perfect Sit
It was a bit breezy today, carrying all the best scents from the river and the fields. It makes my nose go into overdrive.
A couple of visitors walked through the adoption aisle this afternoon. I remembered what the volunteers have been practicing with me: Quiet sitting. Draw them in with my mesmerizing sky blues. When they stopped by my door, I sat down instantly, tilted my head, and gave them my gentlest "please choose me" eyes. They stopped and talked about how beautiful and soft my coat is. They didn't take me out today, but the volunteer gave me a premium dental chew for being such a polite girl. Progress!
Day 25: The Couch Dream
I had a dream last night that I was snoozing on a big, plush rug in front of a woodstove while the snow fell outside. When I woke up, I was still in my kennel, but the morning staff arrived with breakfast right on time, which pushed the bittersweet feelings away.
A nice lady named Rachel stopped by my kennel today during her rounds. She didn't have treats, but she gave me the bestbehind-the-ear scratches. She told me to hang in there and that my perfect family was out there somewhere in the valley. I leaned right into her hand, and snuggled up close, the way I ALWAYS do. The trustees here really know the good scratching spots.
Day 28: I got chosen for the O'Hara Market because I am the bestest girl in the shelter. I loved on all of the toddlers. I sat on all the laps. I was very interested in the chickens but I just kept a watchful eye. I never tried to make my way to them. SO many people said I was, "a special one and had the most BEAUTIFUL eyes," But alas, here I am back in my kennel. Maybe someone will come for me tomorrow.
Day 29: The Long-Stay Inspiration
One of the older dogs who had been here for a really, really long time—a legend named Velma—got adopted not too long ago. Everyone was celebrating, and the energy in the shelter was amazing. It gave all of us a big boost of hope. If Velma can find her perfect family after all that time, I know my day is coming too.
I spent the afternoon practicing my leash manners with a volunteer. We walked all around the perimeter, and I barely pulled at all, even when a magpie dared to land right in front of us.
Day 30: Ready for the Next Adventure
It’s a beautiful day in Montana, and I am officially ready to find my person. I’ve got the energy for long weekend hikes, the brains to learn whatever tricks you want to teach me, and a lifetime supply of loyalty ready to go. Plus, I've got snuggling DOWN!
Until that match happens, I’ll be right here at the Bitter Root shelter, keeping my kennel tidy, working on my social skills, and watching the door. Come say hi—I’m the one with the wagging tail and the big heart.
