The holiday season has arrived, so it's important that we help our pets survive that time of the year.
Here is a brief survival guide:
1. Provide mental stimulation - activities such as sniffing, licking, and chewing help to decrease adrenaline and noradrenaline levels, hence help calming down.
2. Go for a walk before the gathering - the primary needs of your dog will be fulfilled, sniffing will decrease his/her emotions so your dog will be able to welcome the guests in a calmer manner.
3. Prepare safe and quiet resting spot - family gatherings can be chaotic and overstimulating. It's important that your pet has a spot to retreat and rest.
4. Stick to the daily routine - dogs like predictability. That helps them stay emotionally stable and calm.
5. Warn your guests how to behave - that is actually important if your dog gets anxious or overly excited. Let them know ahead of time how to greet your dog, whether your dog enjoys pets or not, etc.
6. Keep human food out of reach - we add spices to the food and many ingredients are poisonous to dogs, like garlic, onion, chocolate, etc. Make sure the human food is out of reach.
