Fun Ways to Celebrate Labor Day with Your Dog

Popular festivities for Labor Day weekend are usually outdoors and tend to involve friends, family, food, and fireworks. Bonus points if you can add a boat, a body of water, a pool, or even a garden hose—especially when it is still so hot outside. Many of these activities offer a great opportunity to include your dog in the fun, as long as you keep a few safety precautions in mind.

Here are some ideas to make the day special for both you and your pet:

Host a Dog-Friendly BBQ: Set up a special area with shade, water, and dog-friendly treats. Add a kiddie pool for extra fun!
Plan a Picnic in the Park: Enjoy a leisurely stroll at a dog-friendly park and pack a picnic basket with dog treats and toys.
Attend a Dog-Friendly Event: Look for local Labor Day events that welcome dogs. Just make sure your dog is comfortable in crowds, and be cautious if fireworks are part of the agenda.
Backyard Movie Night: Create a cozy outdoor theater and watch a movie with your dog.
Take a Nature Walk: Enjoy a hike or walk in nature. Choose a trail that’s suitable for dogs and bring plenty of water to keep you and your pup hydrated.
Organize a Dog Playdate: Invite friends and their dogs over for a playdate. Set up games like fetch or even a mini agility course for extra fun.
Food Safety

Keep your pets safe this Labor Day by avoiding sweets and leftovers and keeping toxic foods like grapes, onions, garlic, and xylitol out of reach—click here for a full list of harmful foods.

Beginning tomorrow and as part of a nationally coordinated effort to reduce risks for rabies in wildlife, Erie County will see distribution of rabies vaccine bait by air and on the ground in August and September.

These activities will start on August 12, with fixed wing airplane dropping bait over rural areas through August 21, and Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) staff placing bait on the ground through August 24. Helicopters will cover suburban areas from September 14-19.

Do NOT disturb vaccine packets. Most packets are eaten within four days; almost all baits will be gone within a week. If packets are not found and eaten, they will harmlessly dissolve and exposed vaccine will become inactivated. If you must move a vaccine packet, wear gloves or use a plastic bag or paper towel to pick it up. Place any damaged baits in the trash; throw intact baits into a wooded area or other raccoon/wildlife habitat.

Residents should WASH HANDS IMMEDIATELY if they come into direct contact with the vaccine or packets, then call the NYSDOH Rabies Information Line at (888) 574-6656.

Additional recommendations include:

Supervise children’s outdoor activities during bait distribution and for one week afterward (through the end of August).

Confine dogs and cats indoors and observe leash laws during the bait distribution interval and for one week afterward. This will increase the probability of raccoon vaccination and decrease the chance of pets finding the baits.

Residents should not risk being bitten while trying to remove bait from your pet’s mouth. The bait will not harm your pet, though an animal may vomit if it consumes several baits. Contact a veterinarian if your pet has consumed vaccine baits.

Residents who come in contact with wildlife vaccine packets can call the NYSDOH Rabies Information Line (888) 574-6656 with questions or concerns.

Finally, RFK, Jr. may halted rabies virus testing but we take it seriously. Rabies is a fatal disease if not immediately treated. Some animals locally have been found to have rabies. That's why we perform this rabies vaccine drop.
