I like cues to be clear and consistent.

Here’s how to ride your horse that I train

Verbal
One Click - walk
Two clicks - trot/jog
Smooch - canter/lope
Easy - Slow down
Whoa - Stop

Non Verbal
3 buttons each side:
• Near front cinch -> move shoulder
• Near back cinch -> move hip
• Center of the two -> move lateral or bend ribs

(From a stop) Both legs near back cinch -> back. I do this rather than a shoulder tap because if you are backing through an obstacle in trail class you need to move the hip and you cannot do that with your feet at the shoulders.

Seat
Sit deep, heals down and shifted forward -> stop.
Tighten abdomen, and roll hips back for one 1-2seconds -> half hat/collect/rate/slow down
Drop right hip -> turn right (left hip -> left)

Hands
Whichever way you pull/lift whether one rein or two you should feel give to the pressure you apply. If you’re not asking for something you shouldn’t be making contact with your horses mouth. Ask them for something and release the pressure.

There is far more you can do that can get precise and specific things but this is a small glimpse

If you are having trouble with your horse when it comes home from training then you need to be asking questions, if with explanation you’re still struggling then you need to invest in coaching sessions with your trainer. Sometimes the horses aren’t the only ones who need a refresher and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Bentley spent 6 hours in the saddle this weekend. Thats more than he rode all of last year. He hung in there well. Even with an ornery pony under-seat. Very much appreciate his help and the folks coming to the rodeo got a kick out of seeing a youngen on a horse.

Now i have to figure out what his reward should be
