Working for an Audience of One
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."Colossians 3:23
There is a freedom that comes when you stop living for the approval of people and start living for the approval of God.
People are fickle. One day they praise you, the next day they criticize you. One person will celebrate your success while another quietly resents it. If your motivation comes from people, your peace will rise and fall with their opinions.
But God calls us to something greater. He calls us to work with excellence, integrity, and purpose not because someone is watching, but because He is.
That changes everything.
It means cleaning stalls with the same attitude as standing in the winner's circle.
It means showing up for the horse that may never win a buckle but still deserves your very best.
It means helping a struggling student even when nobody knows how much time you invested.
It means being faithful in the unseen moments.
The world celebrates results. God notices faithfulness.
As horse trainers, ranchers, parents, and leaders, much of what we do goes unnoticed. We spend countless hours building foundations that nobody applauds. We pour into horses before they ever enter an arena. We pour into children before anyone sees their accomplishments. We make sacrifices that never appear in a photo or social media post.
Yet those hidden moments matter.
Every horse taught with patience.Every child encouraged.Every client treated honestly.Every decision made with integrity.
God sees it all.
In horsemanship, we often say, "It's not what look, it's what feels good."
The same is true in life.
God isn't looking for a perfect performance. He's looking for a faithful heart.
A heart that chooses honesty when deception would be easier.
A heart that chooses consistency when shortcuts are available.
A heart that keeps doing the right thing even when nobody is clapping.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn't to impress people. The goal is to hear the Lord say, "Well done."And that changes how we work, how we lead, how we parent, and how we live.
Not for recognition.
Not for applause.
Not for approval.
But for an Audience of One.
Lord, help me remember that my work is ultimately for You. When I become discouraged, remind me that You see every sacrifice and every act of faithfulness. Help me work with excellence, lead with integrity, and serve with humility. Let my life reflect Your character in the arena, on the ranch, in my home, and everywhere You have called me to be. May I seek Your approval above all else. Amen.
