๐Ÿšจ Parvovirus Doesn't Give Second Chances. ๐Ÿšจ

There are few things more heartbreaking in veterinary medicine than watching a puppy fight for its life against parvovirus.

Parvo is one of the most contagious diseases we see. It spreads incredibly easily from dog to dogโ€”through infected f***s, contaminated surfaces, shoes, clothing, hands, food bowls... even areas where an infected dog has simply been. It's so contagious that any dog who is even suspected of having parvo must be isolated from every other patient. Our medical team wears full PPE when caring for these dogs, and we follow strict disinfection protocols to prevent the virus from spreading throughout the hospital.

That's how serious this disease is.

Parvo attacks the intestinal tract and immune system, causing severe vomiting, relentless bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and weakness. Many puppies become critically ill within just a day.

Treatment isn't as simple as giving medication. These patients often require hospitalization for several days, IV fluids around the clock, medication to control vomiting and pain, intensive nursing care, and in severe cases, plasma transfusions to help replace the proteins and antibodies they've lost while fighting for their lives. Even with aggressive treatment, not every dog survives.

It's heartbreaking to watch families experience the fear and uncertainty of waiting to see if their puppy will make it. It's heartbreaking for our doctors, technicians, and assistants who care for these patients every hour of every day. We celebrate every survivorโ€”but we never forget the ones we lose.

Last week a good samaratin brought an injured baby bunny to our hospital. He had a small cut on his leg but thankfully was otherwise fine. We cleaned the little guy up and then set him free. Good luck little guy๐Ÿ˜€
