I follow Bogie around the woods on tracking expeditions fairly often. Sometimes I can’t help pinching his cute little butt. 🤣

All the splash I found was dried up. Not unusual for him to point where a bird was days ago. I call them history lessons. But good boy could smell foot scent and proceeded very cautiously.

The “whoa”s are merely a reminder. He wasn’t going to move. After I turned off the camera I moved him back a little and snugged him tight to a tree.

Banding is boring for him. He laid down. He knows the drill. 😴

Bogie was super happy to get out on birds today! While we didn’t find many, he did have a perfect point and was steady to wing on a grouse and the same on a woodcock male.

It won’t be long until woodcock chicks are hatching. Bogie doesn’t need much bird work practice —he’s an old hand.

Since Junie’s breeding didn’t take, this is our spring to hopefully get her certified as a brood pointing dog! Working with homers in the yard and woods on our property. It’s so darn fun to see her slamming points with style just like her dad Bogie. We are so very pleased with her.

She was great last fall, largely steady to wing & shot, so we are reinforcing her bird manners and teaching her new things like stop to flush and tempting her with flapping, close birds on the ground and near her in the air. Bird safety is Woodcock Minnesota’s banding program’s top priority, and we take that very seriously.

She’s a really smart girl so she learns fast and retains what she learns. Hoping to be able to get her out on broods soon!

Happy 1st birthday to all of the Valia x Skye puppies!

I’ve really enjoyed seeing all of the pictures and videos of these amazing pups as they grew from little potatoes to gun dogs.
