A new study found that certain “gifted word learner” dogs can pick up the names of objects just by overhearing their owners talk. In tests, these dogs correctly identified new toys after only listening to conversations about them—without any direct training.

Researchers say this ability is similar to how human toddlers learn language, though it appears to be rare and limited to dogs that already know many words.
