✨ Chacerno Blue G.A ✨

2022 | 17h Steel Grey Gelding
Chacoon Blue x Comme Il Faut x Elvis Ter Putte

A stunning Hunter prospect with the pedigree, movement, and jump to go all the way. This gorgeous gelding is a beautiful mover and consistently jumps a 10, with an ideal temperament to match. Sweet, willing, and easy to have in the barn, he has all the makings of a top international Derby prospect.

Broke earlier this year, he is still green and looking for someone in a pro program to continue his education under saddle. He’s smart, eager to please, and wants to do everything right — he just needs the miles to continue putting it all together! 🩶

Humans are remarkably good at creating explanations for why horses behave the way they do, especially when the behavior is frustrating, inconvenient, or frightening.

According to neuroscientist and horse trainer Janet Jones, the problem is that those explanations can quickly become assumptions about motivation. The scientific term is anthropomorphism: the tendency to assign human attributes to animals. With horses, Jones says that may mean attributing strategy to a horse that escapes its stall or malice to a horse that bucks a rider off. The behavior itself is real. The question is whether the human explanation for it is.

“With horses, we see people sometimes ascribe strategy to a horse who escapes his stall,” Jones said. “Or they ascribe malice to a horse who bucks a rider off.”

That distinction is important because we often know what a horse did while knowing much less about why he did it. Horses do silly things sometimes. That’s very true, but deciding that the horse carefully planned the escape or acted out of malice adds a layer of interpretation that may or may not be accurate.

Jones warns that once we decide we understand the horse’s motivation, the next step is often blame. A horse bucks, the rider falls, and people quickly point toward the horse.

“Bad horse,” Jones said.

That label can influence what happens next. Jones says assigning blame in this way can lead to punishment and, in some cases, abuse. The rider may believe they are correcting intentional misconduct when they are actually responding to an explanation they have created themselves.

“A horse does what he does because of natural defense mechanisms, the way that his brain is hardwired, the rewards that he has received for doing things in the past, et cetera,” she said. That asks us to consider that what looks like spite, calculation, or deliberate defiance may have other causes rooted in the horse’s biology or previous experiences.
