This clutch was a reminder that setbacks are inevitable, but not without a silver lining. The story began with a young pairing and poor timing on my part, resulting in a small clutch of five eggs that never inspired much confidence. Despite the odds, one egg persisted through the entire incubation period. Unfortunately, this little one didn't make it across the finish line.

While this wasn't the outcome we hope for, moments like these are part of working with nature. Every clutch teaches us something, and every generation provides valuable information that helps guide future pairings.

What makes this animal special is that it represents the third generation of us reliably producing "pattern-ish" African rock pythons. This fully striped, patternless phenotype continues to show up in our lineage, giving us confidence that we're working with a heritable trait rather than a random anomaly.

With two more females due to lay this month, we're equal parts humbled and excited to see what the next chapter brings. Sometimes success isn't measured by what hatches—it's measured by what you learn along the way.

Not exactly what we're aiming for, but the effort is undeniable.

I can’t be the only one who drinks too much caffeine before cleaning enclosures and suddenly my fight or flight response kicking in every time something moves.

Costa Rica was one for the books. Long nights, muddy trails, miles through the rainforest, and more caffeine than sleep. We were lucky enough to find some incredible animals along the way, but the best part was experiencing it all with my friends. Shared passion, great food, endless laughs, and memories that’ll last a lifetime. Grateful for every step of the adventure. 🇨🇷🐍

Did you guess right?

It was TWO spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus), one of Costa Rica’s native crocodilian species. The name comes from the pronounced bony ridge between the eyes, giving the appearance of a pair of spectacles.

At night, their eyes can reflect light intensely due to the tapetum lucidum. A reflective layer that improves vision in low-light conditions.

Spectacled caimans play an important ecological role in wetland systems as opportunistic predators, feeding on fish, amphibians, invertebrates, and other available prey.

The rainforest after sunset is an entirely different ecosystem.
