While there are no New World Screwworm cases in Georgia, we’re asking livestock and pet owners to keep a close watch on their animals.

The most important thing you can do is know the signs and report suspected cases immediately.

Watch for:
• Draining or enlarging wounds
• Maggots or egg masses in wounds
• Signs of discomfort
• Lesions in body openings (nose, ears, genitalia, umbilical area)

A dog in northwest Spalding County (near the Fayette County line) has tested positive for rabies after being treated at a local veterinary hospital for neurological symptoms.

The dog died after receiving treatment and was sent to the Georgia Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine for testing. The lab confirmed the positive test result on May 28.

Kelly Wilson, Spalding County’s environmental health manager, said she urges everyone to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their pets from contracting rabies, a deadly preventable virus that spreads most often through the bite of an infected animal.

The two best ways to avoid rabies exposure are to stay away from unfamiliar dogs, cats, and wild animals, and to make sure pets are current with their rabies vaccinations. Leo 🧡

Leo lost the only home he’s ever known recently. Now, at 13 years old, this sweet orange gentleman spends his days waiting and wondering if someone will give him a second chance. While younger cats are often chosen first, Leo quietly watches from the sidelines, hoping his person will walk through the door.

Leo doesn’t ask for much. He isn’t looking for excitement or adventure. He just wants a soft bed, a sunny window, gentle hands to pet him, and a peaceful home where he can finally feel safe again.

He would do best with maybe one other calm, respectful kitty, but what he really wants is someone to curl up beside at the end of the day. He loves head rubs, enjoys watching the world go by from a window, and has so much love left to give.

Senior cats like Leo are so often overlooked, but they deserve happy endings too. After all he’s been through, we would love nothing more than to see him spend his golden years knowing comfort, security, and unconditional love.

⚠️ Rabies Alert in Our Area ⚠️

A dog in Spalding County recently tested positive for rabies, serving as an important reminder that rabies is present in our community and poses a serious risk to both pets and people.

Rabies is a fatal disease once symptoms develop, but it is 100% preventable through vaccination. Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccine current is not only required by law in many areas, but it is also one of the most important steps you can take to protect your family and your pets.
