Why Do I Train Horses?
Like many of you, I had a passion for horses as a kid that I never grew out of. Even though I didn’t grow up in a horse family, I never stopped finding ways to ride, learn, and grow in my horsemanship.
While I wasn’t raised in a horse family, I was raised in a family that believes deeply in being stewards of God’s creation. As humans, we’ve been given dominion over the earth and its creatures. I believe that the passion I was given to work with horses is also a responsibility, a calling to steward them well.
To me, training isn’t about asking how a horse can better serve me. It’s about asking how I can better serve the horse.
How can I meet their needs so they feel safe?
How can I build their confidence?
How can I help them feel comfortable in their own body so they want to partner with me?
Every horse that comes through my program matters. And while I may never know how many hands they’ll pass through in their lifetime, my hope is that the foundation and tools I give them will help carry them safely and confidently into whatever comes next.
That’s why I train.

There’s still time left in the year to work on your horse training goals! Also, I am excited to announce that I have a couple training spots open at the farm starting in the spring!

I provide on-site training for you and your horse for those who don't want to send their horse to a trainer. This allows for much more one on one training for you, and your horse gets to learn in their own environment. My goal when working with you and your horse is to establish a willing partnership built on trust. The most important part of a horse's training is the foundation. Colts will get a solid understanding of the basics that will give them long term success in groundwork and under saddle, and horses with problem behaviors will also go back to the basics to address the root of the problem.

-Training and lessons are on a week-by-week basis for $50/session. Sessions are approximately 1 hour long and tailored to fit the horse and rider's needs and abilities. Packaged rates can also be discussed. Travel fees may apply depending on location.
(For colt-starting, must have a safe and suitable place to work in)

Please reach out with any questions!

That Spring feeling is in the air and it's almost time to get those horses back to work! First a huge thank you to all who have made my first year of business a success. It's been very rewarding and humbling to be trusted with such an important part of your horses' lives!

Being a Horseman means being a lifelong learner of the horse. Never assuming you know the right answer, because each horse is different. Here’s to 2024 and all the new opportunities to learn and grow and honor the horse for who they are.

Pearl update! Back in August she had very little halter training and now we’re toying with a bit of liberty work. Liberty is a great way to see how engaged a horse is with you, and refine your body cues. Very excited for Pearl and her owner’s future together and I’m so grateful for every horse I get to work with and learn from.

This little lady is getting started in her career as a well behaved citizen. This fall she’ll be learning everything about ground manners so that she can make a smooth transition to starting under saddle when she’s old enough. Pearl is as smart as a whip, and was constantly pushing and trying to figure out who was the leader with her owner. When that role was finally filled for her, she quickly relaxed and was ready to learn. She’s got lots of curiosity, brains and sass, so I can’t wait to see how much she’ll achieve!

Sometimes horses don’t need you to train on them.

You don’t always need to develop the best training program to fix all their problem behaviors.

I’ve had the opportunity to care for a mare over the past couple months, who’s “problems” are many. She’s an anxious mess most of the time, she paws nonstop in the stall or when tied, she’s easily distracted, and she can be quite pushy. She has also lived in a stall most of her life, only getting out for minimal infrequent exercise. Basically, she has no idea how to manage her own emotions, but she’s very honest about everything she feels.

I have no agenda for her. We take walks outside and stop to graze here and there. If she gets worried and needs to move then we move together. She’s learning the importance of boundaries around my space. She’s slowly learning how to interact with other horses again and enjoying the freedom of running around the paddock on her own.

And it has been so wonderful to see how she’s changed. The hot, prancing mare that comes out of the stall is more often hanging her head low. You can see the release of tension from her body when she’s outside. She loves the feeling of the wind in her face and licks and chews constantly. She can stand tied for 10 minutes without pawing (mostly).
She’s not a list of problem behaviors that need to be fixed.

When we stop looking at the horse as a list of behavioral problems, we can start seeing what the horse truly needs. We need to start looking at the why of these behaviors. Horses aren’t spiteful, vindictive, conniving, or trying to make your life more difficult. They’re just existing within their current physical and mental capabilities.
