Life happens…

Ida was returned to us.

Health challenges prevented her owners from being able to keep her.

She is the same sweetheart she was when she was adopted!

She’s not quite a year old and ready for her furever home.

Come and meet this beauty! ❤️🐾

I mean cats deserve some recognition too! Folklore-but fun to learn about! ❤️🐾

Folklore-but fun to learn about! ❤️🐾

Tonight, August 17, marks the beginning of “Cat Nights” — one of those wonderfully strange pieces of late-summer folklore preserved in old calendars and almanacs. 🐈🌙

We’ve all heard of the Dog Days of Summer, but Cat Nights are much less familiar. According to an old Irish legend, witches were believed to be able to transform themselves into cats eight times and return to human form. On the ninth transformation, however, they would remain cats forever — a story often connected to the old belief that cats have nine lives.

August 17 became associated with the beginning of Cat Nights, a time when summer is starting to fade, the days are shortening, and the nights are growing longer. Cats, naturally active around dusk and dawn, would have seemed especially mysterious in the dim light of late-summer evenings.

Imagine those nights centuries ago, before electric lights. A cat slips through the shadows, its eyes reflecting the moonlight. Somewhere in the darkness comes an eerie yowl. Add old stories about witches and mysterious animals, and it’s easy to see how a tradition like Cat Nights took hold.

It isn’t a scientific season, of course — it’s folklore, part of the old traditions people used to explain the changing seasons and the strange things they noticed around them.

So when darkness settles in tonight, keep an eye on the shadows.

Tonight, August 17, the Cat Nights begin. 🐈‍⬛🌙
