This National Veterinary Technician Week, we're celebrating the incredible Associates who make our hospitals thrive — like Karen, who began as a CSR and never stopped growing and like Joanne, who sought mentorship and support to obtain her VTNE.

At VCA, we're proud to champion our veterinary technicians every step of the way — offering mentorship, encouragement, and the resources to help you reach your full potential.

To every vet tech in our VCA family: thank you. What you do matters deeply — to our teams, to our patients, and to the pet owners who trust us with their most beloved companions.

Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

It is with great sadness that the VCA 12 Mile Animal Hospital team shares the news that our Medical Director and veterinarian, Dr. Savannah McCurdy, passed away unexpectedly on September 6 following complications from an emergency medical procedure.

Savannah leaves behind her husband, Dan; their 14-month-old daughter, Naomi; her mother, Flordeliza; her siblings, Tarra and Kyle; her brother-in-law, Rich; her sister-in-law, Gabby; and a very large extended family who loved her dearly.

Savannah was not only an exceptional veterinarian and leader, but also a deeply valued member of our VCA 12 Mile team. She dedicated herself to her patients and their families, caring for them with tremendous compassion, knowledge and love. Her loss has left our team absolutely devastated.

In the wake of Savannah’s passing, the surrounding VCA community has come together to support our hospital and all those who knew and loved her. We ask for your kindness and patience as we navigate this profound loss.

To honor Savannah’s memory, we have made the decision to carry forward the work she cared so deeply about: serving her patients and this community with the kindness, skill and dedication she showed every day.

VCA 12 Mile Animal Hospital will reopen our doors to clients and patients on Monday, September 14. We will reconnect with clients whose appointments were affected by our unexpected closure and help ensure your pet’s care continues as smoothly as possible.

We recognize this has been an unexpected and difficult time for our clients as well, and we are deeply grateful for your partnership and understanding as we begin to move forward together.

Thank you for trusting Savannah and VCA 12 Mile Animal Hospital with the care of your pets. It is a responsibility we hold close to our hearts, and we are committed to upholding the standard of care Savannah helped build within this community.

With heartfelt gratitude,
The VCA 12 Mile Animal Hospital Team

May 10th is German Shepherd Day! In late 1800s Germany, herdsmen needed a dog that could take command of large flocks of sheep, preventing the sheep from wandering into fields, driving them from one area to another, protecting them from marauders, and acting as a sort of moving fence by constantly patrolling along the flock's perimeter.

Has your cat been itching more often? Atopic dermatitis (atopy) is a common cause of skin problems in cats. When a cat with allergies encounters an environmental protein to which it is allergic, it sets off a reaction leading to skin problems. If you suspect your cat has a new skin problem, call your veterinarian to schedule a visit 🐾
