October is a great reminder that one of the simplest things you can do for your dog’s health, and your own is take a walk together.
Doc often talks with pet owners about the importance of regular exercise. But walks offer so much more than just physical activity. They provide an opportunity for you and your dog to spend time together, explore your surroundings and build healthy habits that can benefit both of you for years to come.
For your dog, regular walks can:
🐕 Help maintain a healthy weight and support cardiovascular health
🐕 Strengthen muscles, joints and bones
🐕 Provide mental stimulation through new sights, sounds and smells
🐕 Reduce boredom and help prevent unwanted behaviors
🐕 Support healthy digestion and regular bowel movements
🐕 Give your dog valuable time to explore and socialize
And don't forget about your own health! Walking regularly can improve cardiovascular fitness, support a healthy weight, reduce stress and give you a chance to step away from the demands of the day.
One of the biggest benefits may be the simplest: quality time together. Your dog doesn't care how far you walk or how fast you go. They simply enjoy being with you and experiencing the world by your side.
If your dog isn't accustomed to regular walks, start slowly. A short walk around the neighborhood is a great beginning. As your dog's stamina improves, gradually increase the distance and duration. Always consider your pet's age, breed, weight, joint health and overall condition when establishing an exercise routine.
And remember, walks don't have to be complicated. Put on the leash, step outside and make it part of your everyday routine. Your dog gets exercise, enrichment and time with their favorite person—and you get many of the same benefits.
This Walk Your Dog Week, make a commitment to take a few more steps together. Your dog will probably think it's the best part of their day! 🐾
