Oop.. Caught you scrolling, and lucky you, because we’re giving you the inside scoop on surgery at ReadyVets. 😎

Did you know that we’re equipped to perform most surgeries right here at ReadyVets? That means when your pet needs more than just diagnostics and medical care, we can often take care of them right here in our clinic.

Yesterday, we had a very special case: a male cat who needed a perineal urethrostomy (PU).

A PU is a surgical procedure that creates a new, wider opening for urine to pass through by removing the narrow portion of the male cat’s urethra. It may be recommended for cats who have experienced repeated urinary blockages or severe urethral disease, especially when medical management is no longer enough.

Know the signs of a urinary blockage:
• Repeatedly going to the litter box with little or no urine produced
• Straining or crying while trying to urinate
• Licking the ge***al area excessively
• Blood in the urine
• Restlessness, hiding, vomiting, or loss of appetite
• A painful or tense abdomen

A urinary blockage is an emergency. If your male cat is repeatedly trying to urinate but little or no urine is coming out, don’t wait it out… bring them to a veterinarian immediately. A complete obstruction can become life-threatening very quickly.

Let’s talk about heat strokes in pets… one of the more common emergencies we see in urgent care at this time of year.

Summer heat can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Heat strokes can happen quickly and can cause serious, potentially life-threatening damage to the body.

Signs of a heat stroke include:
• Heavy or excessive panting
• Excessive drooling
• Red or pale gums
• Weakness, wobbliness, or collapse
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Confusion, tremors, or seizures

How can you prevent it?
• Never leave your pet in a parked car…even for a few minutes.
• Avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Early morning and evening are safest.
• Always provide plenty of fresh water and access to shade.
• Be especially cautious with senior pets, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds.
• Check the pavement before walks…if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

If you suspect your pet is experiencing heat stroke, don’t wait to see if they improve. Move them to a cool area, begin cooling with cool (not ice-cold) water, and seek veterinary care immediately.

Meet Cody! 😭😍

This adorably mischievous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel came to see us after developing some GI upset. Cody has a bit of a history of helping himself to “forbidden snacks,” and this time… it was ribbon.

After taking X-rays, we determined that surgery was the safest option. Thankfully, here at ReadyVets we’re equipped to perform most surgeries right here in our hospital, so Cody was able to get the care he needed without delay.

We’re so happy to report that Cody recovered beautifully. Just look at him at his recheck! Back to his happy, handsome self and hopefully staying out of trouble for a while.

If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, don’t wait for vomiting, lethargy, or other symptoms to appear. The sooner they’re evaluated, the more treatment options there may be… and in some cases, early intervention can even help avoid surgery.

Rumor has it we’re continuing to make exciting updates, and… fortunately the allegations are true. 💃🏼

We’re excited to officially introduce our new online pharmacy portal! 🐾

Now you can order many of your pet’s routine medications from the comfort of home. No more trying to squeeze a trip to the clinic into your busy schedule for refills on things like allergy medications, arthritis medications, flea & tick prevention, and more!

A few things to keep in mind:
• You must be an existing ReadyVets client to place orders through the portal.
• Some medications, such as antibiotics and certain prescription medications, may require your pet to be rechecked before a refill can be approved.

We’re always looking for ways to make caring for your pets a little easier, and we’re so happy to be able to offer this new service!

Officially 2 years ago, ReadyVets opened its doors with one simple goal… to provide compassionate urgent veterinary care to the pets and families of our community.

We are so proud of Dr. Capps for building a place that has been able to help save so many lives while giving families comfort during some of their hardest moments. We may be a little biased, but we truly believe ReadyVets is home to some of the most empathetic, talented, and hardworking veterinary professionals in the Upstate.

Before you ask… no, Jasper is not AI 😭

Though he’s so cute we may have had to check his vitals a few extra times just to make sure he was real.

Jasper originally came to see us for a ruptured abscess that required wound care and a tie-over bandage. A tie-over bandage is a technique where bandaging material is secured directly over a wound using sutures, helping keep medications and dressings in place while protecting the area and promoting healing.

We’re happy to report that Jasper’s wound is healing BEAUTIFULLY! While our team deserves a little credit, we think his adorable recovery outfit has been doing some heavy lifting by preventing him from scratching at the site.

Abscesses are common in cats and often develop after bite wounds, scratches, or other injuries. Signs of an abscess can include swelling, redness, pain, drainage, a foul odor, decreased appetite, lethargy, or hiding more than usual.

Early intervention is key. Abscesses can worsen quickly, allowing infection to spread deeper into surrounding tissues and resulting in delayed wound healing or more extensive treatment.

If you think your pet may have an abscess or any suspicious swelling, don’t wait to have it evaluated. The sooner treatment is started, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate this adorable Aussie girl? 💕 Meet Lily, who came to see us after sustaining a laceration from an altercation with another dog. 🤕

Thankfully, Lily’s sweet family acted quickly and brought her in right away… and that makes all the difference! Prompt treatment of wounds is incredibly important, as delays can increase the risk of infection and tissue necrosis (when damaged tissue loses its blood supply), making repair and healing much more challenging.

Our team got right to work getting this sweet girl fixed up. Lily’s wound was carefully cleaned and repaired with sutures, and a drain was placed to help promote optimal healing and recovery.

We’re happy to report that Lily is doing much better and is well on her way back to being her happy, fluffy self! 🥰

If your pet has been involved in a fight or has sustained a laceration or other injury, don’t wait to seek care. Early intervention can make a huge difference in healing outcomes and help prevent more serious complications.
