Meet Tyga 🩵

Poor Tyga got the short end of the stick after getting into a fight with his housemate. Unfortunately, even pets who have lived together peacefully can get into fights, and these situations can be difficult to predict!

Our technicians quickly got to work clipping and thoroughly cleaning Tyga’s wounds to prepare him for sutures. One wound was so extensive, with significant pocketing beneath the skin, that we needed to place a Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain.

A JP drain is a small tube connected to a suction bulb that continuously removes fluid from beneath the skin. This helps prevent fluid buildup, reduces dead space, and promotes proper healing!

Why is prompt treatment so important after a dog fight?

Bite wounds can be deceiving! What looks like a tiny puncture on the surface can hide extensive tissue damage underneath. Bacteria introduced during a bite can also lead to serious infections and abscesses.

If your pet has been involved in a fight, don’t wait to have them evaluated! Even wounds that appear minor can become much bigger problems without treatment.

We’re so glad we could get sweet Tyga patched up and on the road to recovery! ❤️

We apologize in advance… but it’s that time of day to cry again. 😩

Meet our teeny tiny rockstar, Bella Mae. 🪽

This sweet little girl had a pretty rough start. One of our wonderful clients found Bella Mae being kicked around by some children in her neighborhood and immediately stepped in to rescue her, rushing her straight to us.

She was quickly brought back for an exam, baseline vitals and bloodwork, and placement of the tiniest IV😭. She spent the day with us receiving fluids, being closely monitored, and getting plenty of love and support from our team.

We are so grateful for Bella Mae’s rescuer, who is now her forever momma (time to cry again). Without her quick action and attentiveness, this sweet girl may not have made it.

And the best news? Bella Mae is THRIVING in her forever home! She’s eating, drinking, playing, and finally getting to show off that precious little personality of hers.

We couldn’t be happier for this sweet baby and are so thankful for the kind people who step up when animals need them most. ❤️

If there’s one thing we can always count on, it’s Courteney going above and beyond for her patients and their people. She puts so much heart into every case, is always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed, and somehow still manages to keep us laughing through even the craziest shifts.

She’s the definition of a team player, a wonderful veterinary technician, and such an important part of the ReadyVets crew. We are so grateful for everything she brings to this team and so lucky to have her!

You wouldn’t believe it… but we spotted a wild Dr. Capps surgerizing something again 👁️

Yesterday’s feature presentation: Cherry eye!

We had a sweet patient, Chaos, come in with a cherry eye that needed a little fixing up, and here our fearless leader is taking care of business as per usual. 😎

So, what exactly IS a cherry eye?

Cherry eye happens when the gland of the third eyelid pops out of its normal position, creating that very noticeable red, round “cherry” appearance in the corner of the eye. It can cause irritation, redness, discharge and inflammation, and while it can definitely look alarming, it is typically very treatable.

During surgery, we carefully reposition and secure the gland back into its normal location rather than simply removing it. That gland plays an important role in tear production, so whenever possible, we want to save it!

What should you look for?
• A red or pink fleshy lump in the corner of the eye
• Excessive tearing
• Redness or irritation
• Squinting or rubbing at the eye
• Eye discharge

If you spot something that looks like a tiny cherry where a cherry definitely should NOT be, give us a call! 🍒

Oh Ranger… sweet, sweet Ranger. 🤦

Our little dachshund baby chose to make last Tuesday a very interesting one when he decided a ni****ne pouch looked like a tasty snack. Because apparently dog treats just weren’t cutting it that day.

Ni****ne ingestion can be dangerous for dogs, even in small amounts. It can cause vomiting, drooling, agitation, tremors, weakness, abnormal heart rate, changes in blood pressure, seizures and, in severe cases, can be life threatening.

Early prevention is key. If you think your pet has gotten into a ni****ne pouch, cigarette, v**e or other ni****ne containing product, do not wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency or urgent care clinic right away.

Thankfully, Ranger received the care he needed and is back to his adorable little dachshund self. We are hoping his next questionable life choice involves stealing a treat instead. 😭

Long backs, little legs, big personalities… and unfortunately, a little more risk for back problems. 👁️

Let’s talk about IVDD!

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) occurs when a disc in the spine degenerates, bulges, or ruptures and puts pressure on the spinal cord. It can cause anything from mild back pain to weakness or paralysis.

IVDD is especially common in long-backed, short-legged breeds like Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Corgis, Beagles, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, and Basset Hounds, but any dog can be affected.

Signs to watch for:
• Hunched or stiff back
• Reluctance to jump or use stairs
• Pain when moving or being picked up
• Wobbly or weak back legs
• Dragging or knuckling paws
• Trouble standing or walking
• Loss of bladder/bowel control

If your dog suddenly develops back pain, weakness, or difficulty walking, don’t wait it out. IVDD can progress quickly, and early evaluation is important.

Did you know that we’re equipped to perform most surgeries right here at ReadyVets? That means when your pet needs more than just diagnostics and medical care, we can often take care of them right here in our clinic.

Yesterday, we had a very special case: a male cat who needed a perineal urethrostomy (PU).

A PU is a surgical procedure that creates a new, wider opening for urine to pass through by removing the narrow portion of the male cat’s urethra. It may be recommended for cats who have experienced repeated urinary blockages or severe urethral disease, especially when medical management is no longer enough.

Know the signs of a urinary blockage:
• Repeatedly going to the litter box with little or no urine produced
• Straining or crying while trying to urinate
• Licking the ge***al area excessively
• Blood in the urine
• Restlessness, hiding, vomiting, or loss of appetite
• A painful or tense abdomen

A urinary blockage is an emergency. If your male cat is repeatedly trying to urinate but little or no urine is coming out, don’t wait it out… bring them to a veterinarian immediately. A complete obstruction can become life-threatening very quickly.

Let’s talk about heat strokes in pets… one of the more common emergencies we see in urgent care at this time of year.

Summer heat can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Heat strokes can happen quickly and can cause serious, potentially life-threatening damage to the body.

Signs of a heat stroke include:
• Heavy or excessive panting
• Excessive drooling
• Red or pale gums
• Weakness, wobbliness, or collapse
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Confusion, tremors, or seizures

How can you prevent it?
• Never leave your pet in a parked car…even for a few minutes.
• Avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Early morning and evening are safest.
• Always provide plenty of fresh water and access to shade.
• Be especially cautious with senior pets, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds.
• Check the pavement before walks…if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

If you suspect your pet is experiencing heat stroke, don’t wait to see if they improve. Move them to a cool area, begin cooling with cool (not ice-cold) water, and seek veterinary care immediately.

Meet Cody! 😭😍

This adorably mischievous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel came to see us after developing some GI upset. Cody has a bit of a history of helping himself to “forbidden snacks,” and this time… it was ribbon.

After taking X-rays, we determined that surgery was the safest option. Thankfully, here at ReadyVets we’re equipped to perform most surgeries right here in our hospital, so Cody was able to get the care he needed without delay.

We’re so happy to report that Cody recovered beautifully. Just look at him at his recheck! Back to his happy, handsome self and hopefully staying out of trouble for a while.

If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, don’t wait for vomiting, lethargy, or other symptoms to appear. The sooner they’re evaluated, the more treatment options there may be… and in some cases, early intervention can even help avoid surgery.
