Hair growing on a puppy’s eye?! 👀

Meet Georgie, a Bernadoodle puppy with an ocular dermoid—a congenital condition where skin-like tissue develops on or around the eye and can even grow hair.

Ocular dermoids are present from birth, but they may go unnoticed until they begin causing irritation or discomfort, or until the hair growing from them becomes more apparent.

In Georgie’s case, the dermoid was causing irritation to his cornea. Dr. Korb surgically removed the abnormal tissue with a keratectomy.

Ophtho Insight: Ocular Dermoids

Hair growing on the eye? It may sound unusual, but ocular dermoids are a congenital condition where skin tissue develops on the eye or on the structures around the eye.

These dermoids are present at birth and can grow hair or fur, which can cause irritation, excessive tearing, squinting, and discomfort. Depending on their location and size, they may also interfere with vision.

Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the abnormal tissue, with the surgical approach depending on where the dermoid is located.

This summer has kept us busy in the best way, and we’re so grateful for every patient who has walked through our doors, every client who has trusted us with their pets, and every referring veterinarian who continues to send their patients our way.

Meet Sadie! 🐾 Sadie was visiting the area from Alabama and needed an intraocular pressure (IOP) check while she was in town. Our team was happy to step in and provide the ophthalmic care she needed while keeping her regular veterinary team in the loop.

Sadie’s regular care is through BluePearl Pet Hospital in Birmingham, AL, and we’re always happy to collaborate with our colleagues to help provide continuity of care for patients—even when they’re miles from home.

Whether your pet is traveling, temporarily staying in the area, or needs ophthalmic care while their regular ophthalmologist is unavailable, we’re happy to work alongside your veterinary team whenever possible.

Stella came to us with cherry eye, a condition where the gland of the third eyelid becomes displaced and protrudes from the corner of the eye.

Cherry eye is thought to occur when the connective tissue that normally holds this gland in place is weak or insufficiently developed. It is more common in certain breeds and often occurs in younger dogs.

This gland plays an important role in tear production, helping keep the eye lubricated, protected, and healthy. That’s why, when correcting cherry eye, our goal is not to remove the gland. Instead, the gland is carefully repositioned back into its normal location, allowing it to remain functional and continue contributing to healthy tear production.

Dr. Korb performed Stella’s surgery, and we’re so happy with her beautiful result!
