October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜 We wear purple to raise awareness, honor survivors, and stand in support of everyone impacted by domestic violence. 💜 We must recognize that animal cruelty is not a separate incident, it is a tactic of domestic terrorism.

Research compiled by organizations like the Animal Legal Defense Fund highlights that animal abuse rarely happens in isolation. Individuals who abuse animals are statistically up to five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans, and animal cruelty frequently overlaps with domestic violence, child abuse, and bullying.

Creating safety for human victims must also include safety for their animals. If you are planning to leave, please include your pet in your safety plan. Contact local humane societies or organizations like the Redfern Animal Safe Haven or Sheltering Animals and Families Together (SAF-T) for resources on pet-friendly sheltering.

Willow, the 6 ½ months old orange tabby cat, found her furever family on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Bond County Humane Society’s shelter in Greenville, Illinois. Willow was surrendered to BCHS after she’d been found as a stray. We placed her into a foster home for a few weeks until she came to stay in the shelter. Her foster mom said, “Willow is a beautiful rare orange female kitten. She is petite and quiet and has a long haired coat that is so smooth and soft! She is a cuddle bug and a purr machine! She loves to be held and is definitely a lap cat! She is not shy at all, and is immediately trusting as soon as she meets you. She is good with other cats and kids!" Congrats and thanks for adopting from BCHS!! BCHS holds regular pet adoption events at the Fairview Heights Petco on Saturdays AND at our Greenville Shelter Office during public hours.

October 14th is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. We are so used to seeing overweight pets that when someone sees a pet at a healthy weight, they often think they are underweight.

While there are health conditions that contribute to weight issues, for most pets, being overweight is due to their diet. Treats, snacks, and cookies all add calories, and many times owners don't consider that when deciding how much to feed their pet. Breaking treats in half or finding healthier alternatives for goodies, like berries or green beans, can help reduce calories. Using an actual measuring cup to feed and using the guide on the food bag and feeding for what your pet SHOULD weigh, not what they DO weigh, are great places to start when trying to get your pet to lose weight. Sometimes switching to a senior diet or weight management diet, even if your pet isn't technically a senior, can help decrease calories while still helping your pet feel full after eating.

Being overweight can cause your pet to have other health issues- more inflammation leads to more arthritis and some cancers, diabetes, and some organ diseases can all be affected by excess weight.

Amelia, the 1 year old brown tabby cat, found her furever home on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Bond County Humane Society’s shelter in Greenville, Illinois. Amelia was surrendered to BCHS after she’d had her babies at a lady’s house. She was a great mom, but eager to start her brand new life as a princess in the ‘no more babies club.’ Almost anyone could get Amelia to purr while getting her pet-pets. She sure struck gold! All adoptions are subject to the application process and the availability of adoption counselors. All BCHS pets are spayed or neutered, UTD on vaccinations, tested for FeLV/FIV (cats), treated for internal and external parasites, and microchipped.
