Bugs are back, and so are the itchy dance parties 🕺! Time to break out the fly masks, sheets, and sprays - aka the ultimate party accessories! 🎉 Don't forget to inspect those horses daily for any rub marks (think under jaws, around eyes, ears, legs... you get the idea). And let's be real, it's about to get hotter than a ghost pepper👻 out there, so make sure those horses are drinking water like its happy hour and have a shady spot to escape the sun ☀️

Hey there, horse lovers! 🐴 We've been bombarded with questions about weight loss (no, it's not just the horses that need to hit the gym 🏋️‍♀️). The dry weather has put a major delay on grass growth, so it's time to get real about our feeding strategies, especially for our senior horses 🙏. Check those feed bags for recommended amounts and give our Vets a call for a chat to make sure your horse is getting the correct amount of nutrients and minerals📞.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is encouraging equine owners to have their animals vaccinated against Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis and West Nile Virus.

“Mosquito-breeding season in North Carolina lasts from spring until the first frost and horses are at risk if not properly vaccinated,” Troxler said. “EEE is fatal 90 percent of the time in horses and WNV has a fatality rate of 30 percent. However, both diseases are preventable by vaccination.” So far this year we have had no cases of EEE or WNV, but last year there was one case of West Nile Virus, Troxler added.

State Veterinarian Dr. Mike Martin recommends that equine owners talk to their veterinarians about an effective vaccination protocol to protect horses from mosquito-borne diseases. The combination vaccination initially requires multiple injections for horses, mules and donkeys that have no prior vaccination history.

Continuing our skin funk party🎉. Let's talk about Scratches!
🦠What is it: This funky skin condition is like the ultimate party crasher - it's caused by a trio of unwanted guests: bacteria, fungi, and sometimes parasites!
💦Causes: Areas that are constantly wet, dirty, muddy, unsanitary (think porta potty at the party).
📨Who's invited? Everyone is invited however the VIP list contains horses with white legs, pink skin, and horses with "feathering" (long lushes hair) that traps moisture.
📍Location: Lower leg
🔎Signs: Heat within the lower leg, scabs around the pastern, tenderness, pus, and sometimes lameness.
🧼Prevention: Keep that porta potty (barn/pasture) clean and dry.
💊Treatments: By knowing the guest list, we can prevent this bash from happening in the first place! 💡
📱Give us a call if your horse develops Scratches to get a treatment plan and/or medications.
