🎃🐾 Luca Has One Very Important Weekend Reminder 🐾🎃

Luca is already dressed for the occasion, so apparently the rest of us need to get with the program.

This Saturday, we’re turning part of Pitt County Animal Services into a little Halloween stop for the afternoon. Bring the kids by in costume, grab some candy, check out the trunks and tables, and enjoy a few hours of Halloween fun with us.

Some of our shelter dogs will also be getting out of their kennels for the afternoon, so there may be a few four-legged greeters hoping to steal some attention while everyone makes their way around.

Saturday, October 17
1:00–4:00 PM

It’s free to attend and open to the community. Come for a little while or stay and make the rounds — no registration needed.

We just ask that personal pets stay home so our shelter dogs can enjoy their afternoon out safely.

Luca has clearly decided this is a dress-up event, so now we need everyone else to bring the Halloween spirit.

🏡🐾 Forever Home Friday: Chutney 🐾🏡

Chutney’s family sent us an update, and it sounds like he has settled into home life pretty perfectly.

He has adjusted amazingly and is enjoying the spoiled life. His family says he has brought them so many snuggles, kisses, and laughs, and they love having him in their home.

We love getting to see our animals after they leave the shelter and hearing how they are doing once they are home.

🐾📊 September By the Numbers 📊🐾

September was a busy month at Pitt County Animal Services, with 185 animals coming into our care and 132 leaving through adoption, rescue placement, or reunification with their families.

We also saw a big jump in adoptions. During August, 51 animals were adopted. In September, that number climbed to 84 — 33 more adoptions in one month. Our half-price adoption special for animals over a year gave even more of our adult animals a chance to find their homes.

Flip and Flops were adopted together.

Three additional dogs were adopted as soon as they became available.

That is 132 animals who left our shelter through adoption, rescue placement, or reunification with their families during September.

Thank you to everyone who adopted, fostered, rescued, volunteered, donated, shared our posts, and supported the animals in our care. September brought a lot of animals through our doors, but it also gave us a lot to celebrate.

🌹🦄 Rose Understood the Assignment 🦄🌹

Apparently being a Golden Girl was not enough for Rose.

This week she added unicorn and Aldi employee to the résumé, and somehow both worked.

Rose came to PCAS with her mom, Sophia, and her sisters, all named after the Golden Girls. Her sisters have since been adopted, leaving Rose still waiting for someone to notice the long-legged, big-smiling little dog we have gotten to know.

She is about a year old, around 33 pounds, and about as sweet and mild-mannered as they come. There really is not much not to love about her.

Rose is heartworm positive, but that is only one part of the dog standing in front of you wearing a sparkly unicorn headband like she was born for it.

If the costumes got your attention, good. Now come meet the girl underneath them.

🎃🐾 THE COMMUNITY CAT ROOM CAME DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION 🐾🎃

Witch, Target, Top Hat, Baby Bengal, Potions, and Bow Tie decided to get into the Halloween spirit, and honestly, they understood the assignment.

Some looked adorable. Some looked slightly confused. Some looked like they were being very patient with us. All of them were incredibly entertaining.

🎃 OUR COMMUNITY CAT ROOM IS READY FOR HALLOWEEN 🎃

We currently have 13 cats in our Community Cat Room looking for their forever homes, and they are making sure nobody forgets they are here.

They are friendly, curious, entertaining, and apparently very committed to inspecting every Halloween prop we bring into the room.

Today, the pumpkin bucket had their full attention.

Tomorrow, we’ll show you what happened when the costumes came out.

🐾🎾 DON’T LET THE NAME FOOL YOU 🎾🐾

With a name like Scallywag, you might expect a dog who spends his day causing trouble.

Instead, you get this guy.

Scallywag is about 2 years old, around 50 pounds, and one of those dogs who is just really easy to like. He is sweet, cuddly, good on leash, loves people, and is believed to be housetrained.

He also has one very important hobby.

Fetch.

If there is a ball involved, Scallywag is interested. Very interested.

And when you ask him to sit, he has apparently decided a normal sit is too boring. He keeps his eyes on you, spins around, then parks himself right on your feet like that was obviously the correct way to do it.

That little bit of goofiness is pretty much Scallywag in a nutshell.

He is sweet without being boring, playful without being overwhelming, and the kind of dog who makes it very easy to picture him as somebody’s everyday sidekick.

If your house has room for a couch buddy, a walking buddy, and someone willing to take fetch very seriously, Scallywag might be your guy.

🐾🩷 WITCH HAS CLAIMED THE PINK BED 🩷🐾

Witch came to PCAS with 15 other cats, but at this point she has made it very clear that she is her own woman.

These days, she is the boss of our Community Cat Room, and over the last week we have accidentally built up quite a collection of photos showing one very important fact:

Witch loves that pink bed.

Not in a casual, “this is a nice place to sit” kind of way.

More in a “this is my throne now” kind of way.

She stretches out in it, curls up in it, flips upside down in it, and somehow keeps managing to look completely at home every single time. It has basically become part of her brand.

Witch has the kind of presence that makes a cat memorable. She knows the room, she knows what she likes, and she carries herself like she fully expects everyone else to catch up.

If you are looking for a cat with personality, confidence, and very strong opinions about good bedding, Witch would love to meet you.

🎃 WE’RE LOOKING FOR TRUNKS & TABLES FOR PCAS TRUNK OR TREAT! 🎃

Apparently some of our animals are already taking Halloween very seriously.

The costumes are coming out, the shelter dogs are getting ready for their big afternoon out, and now we just need some local businesses and organizations to join the fun.

Our 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat is Saturday, October 17 from 1–4 PM here at Pitt County Animal Services, and participation is completely free.

You can decorate a trunk or set up a table, hand out candy or kid-friendly giveaways, and make your setup as simple or as creative as you want. No elaborate Pinterest masterpiece required.

One of our favorite parts of this event is giving our shelter dogs the chance to get out of their kennels, meet new people, and spend the afternoon being part of the community.
