🐾 Jax Is Ready for the Good Part 🐾

Jax was found abandoned at a house.

He came to us around 100 pounds, with painful skin issues, and clearly had not been having an easy time.

But if you meet Jax now, what stands out most is not what happened to him.

It is how gentle he is.

His kennel board says “gentle giant,” and that really is Jax.

At about 8 years old, he is one of the biggest dogs at the shelter, but he is also one of the easiest to spend time with. He waits patiently while you get him ready to go outside, appears to be housetrained, and walks beautifully on leash right beside you.

For a 100-pound dog, he is honestly a dream to walk.

He has also been calm around the dogs he passes, and after more than two months here, we are finally starting to see a little more of his personality come out.

Recently, Jax got some pep in his step and pranced around the play yard.

And yes, watching this enormous 8-year-old man bounce around like that was every bit as sweet as it sounds.

Jax is neutered, heartworm negative, and would be happiest in a home without cats.

We know bigger dogs can sometimes wait longer.

We know older dogs can too.

But we also know there is a home out there somewhere for Jax.

A home that is going to appreciate the calm walks, the easy companionship, the giant sweet face, and every little bit of joy this guy is finally starting to show.

We just need to help that home find him.

This morning, this guy was brought into the shelter after being found running near the school on County Home Road. He is an unaltered, three-legged male Lab.

If you recognize him or know where he belongs, please contact Pitt County Animal Services. Proof of ownership will be required.

🐾🐱 Captain Had to Pass the Dollar Tree Test 🐱🐾

One of the questions we get all the time is:

“Is this dog good with cats?”

Captain had to work his way up to the Dollar Tree portion of the test, and once he got there, he handled the introduction really well.

Enter Dollar Tree.

Dollar Tree LOVES helping with dog introductions.

Seriously.

Some cats would like to file a complaint with management if a dog so much as looks in their direction.

Dollar Tree sees a dog walking in and basically says, “Oh good, my 2:00 is here.”

Captain was the latest applicant.

Before a dog ever gets to this point, we work through several steps and watch things like body language, focus, reactions, and whether everyone involved is comfortable enough to keep moving forward.

Then, if things look good, Dollar Tree clocks in.

Captain came in curious and interested.

Dollar Tree came in acting like she had done this approximately 400 times and had absolutely no concerns about the large creature sniffing around her.

Captain checked her out.

Dollar Tree checked him out.

There was some sniffing, some staring, and at least one moment where Captain appeared to be wondering why this tiny animal had so much confidence.

And overall?

Captain did really well.

Of course, a shelter cat test cannot guarantee that any dog and cat will automatically live happily ever after. Every animal is different, and introductions in a home still need to be done carefully.

But Captain gave us some really good information about how he responds to cats.

And Dollar Tree once again completed her shift without requesting a raise.

We should probably work on that.

🚨🐾 Luca Has Submitted His Application 🐾🚨

Hi, I’m Luca, and I heard Officer Barnhill retired.

So obviously there is an opening.

I would like to formally apply.

I have already located the uniform, secured the catch pole, and carried it around the yard like I knew exactly what I was doing.

Nobody asked me to do that.

That has never stopped me before.

You see, I LOVE having a job. The job does not need to make sense. Give me a toy, a bed, a Trader Joe’s bag, or apparently actual Animal Control equipment, and I will proudly carry it around like the entire operation depends on me.

Do I know where I am taking it?

No.

Do I look confident?

Absolutely.

I also work well with others. I have done great with other dogs, and when I was introduced to a cat, I was mostly concerned about why such a small creature seemed so confident.

Honestly, same.

Luca is one of those dogs who wakes up happy, finds something ridiculous to do, and somehow makes everyone around him happier too. There may not be a whole lot happening behind those very pretty eyes, but whatever IS happening in there is having an excellent time.

Unfortunately, after reviewing his application, we have decided Luca may not be quite ready for a career in Animal Control.

He is much better qualified for another position.

Professional best friend.

🐾✨ Rickee Rozayy Has Range ✨🐾

Some dogs show up with one look.

Rickee Rozayy prefers options.

One minute he is giving beach vacation. The next he is serving tiny cowboy. Then suddenly he is a dinosaur. Or a butterfly. Or whatever else fits the level of confidence he woke up with that day.

And confidence is definitely not something Rickee is lacking.

He prances. He entertains. He carries himself like everyone should already know who he is. Rickee Rozayy may be a small dog, but in his mind he is operating on a much larger scale.

He came to us with demodex, which is the non-contagious kind of mange, and his hair is growing back in more and more as he continues to improve.

Underneath all the outfit changes and main-character energy is a dog who is just plain fun. Rickee keeps people laughing, keeps things interesting, and always seems convinced he is doing a much better job at life than the rest of us.

Honestly, he may not be wrong.

Rickee Rozayy is dog friendly, though we still recommend a meet and greet with any potential canine siblings.

If you are looking for a little dog with a big personality, a dramatic strut, and enough confidence for an entire household, come meet Rickee Rozayy.

He is growing his hair back, working on his comeback, and more than ready for an audience of his own.

🐸💦 Froggie Is Ready to Graduate From the Kiddie Pool 💦🐸

Froggie has made it very clear that she can have a great time with just a kiddie pool, a toy, and somebody willing to let her splash around for a while.

But at almost a year old, this happy girl deserves a whole lot more than that.

Froggie has been here since the end of March, which means she has spent way too much of her puppyhood growing up at the shelter. She has handled it better than most. She stays joyful, goofy, and ready to have fun, whether that means pool time, carrying around a toy, or just being included in whatever is going on.

She is the kind of dog who makes people smile fast.

And the best part is that Froggie is not just fun. She is also easy to enjoy. She walks beautifully on leash, loves meeting new people, listens well, and really wants to please. She can bring the silly puppy energy, then turn right around and be the kind of dog who is just happy to be with you.

Honestly, Froggie feels like the kind of dog who should have been scooped up months ago.

Instead, she is still here.

Still making the best of shelter life.
Still turning pool time into a party.
Still waiting for somebody to realize she is not just cute. She is the whole package.

This week, Froggie’s adoption fee is half price, and we really need people to look at her now.

🐾😊 Geraldine Has Apparently Decided Life Is Pretty Good 😊🐾

Geraldine smiles. A lot.

Not the occasional “somebody is holding a treat” smile either. This 6-year-old girl seems genuinely convinced that getting out of her kennel, spending time with a person, and being included in whatever is happening is a pretty great day.

Geraldine is about 47 pounds and has traded the puppy chaos for something much easier.

She is patient. Calm. Loving. Happy to go do something with you, but equally happy to sit beside you and simply exist for a while.

Basically, Geraldine has reached the stage of life where she knows not every activity needs to become an event.

And somehow, a dog this easy to enjoy has had very little interest.

She has been waiting while other dogs have come and gone, still greeting her people with that same ridiculous smile and still acting like a little attention from someone who knows her name is enough.

We think Geraldine deserves to raise her standards.

She deserves the soft bed. The window. The lazy afternoons. The person coming home who is coming home to her.

Geraldine’s adoption fee is half price right now, and we would really love for this to be the week somebody finally looks at that smiling face and realizes she is exactly what they have been looking for.

She has already figured out how to enjoy the little things. Now she just needs someone to give her the big one: a home.

📻🐾 Last Call for Officer Barnhill 🐾📻

Today is Officer Barnhill’s last day at Pitt County Animal Services.

After 25 years, that is a sentence we are still getting used to saying.

For a quarter of a century, Officer Barnhill has been part of the everyday rhythm of this place. Calls to answer, animals to help, coworkers to support, problems to solve, and all the strange little things that somehow become part of working at an animal shelter.

Twenty-five years is a lot of memories.

A lot of animals.

A lot of stories.

And probably a lot of moments that started with, “This should be quick.”

Today, we get to celebrate all of it.

Officer Barnhill, thank you for 25 years of showing up for Pitt County Animal Services, for the animals in our care, and for the community we serve.

We hope retirement brings you more quiet mornings, fewer radios, and absolutely no one asking you to handle “just one more thing.”

Congratulations, Officer Barnhill.

After 25 years, you have more than earned this last call.

PCAS Closed for Adoption Hours Tomorrow Afternoon

Pitt County Animal Services will be closed for adoption hours tomorrow, Thursday, August 27, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM as we celebrate the retirement of Officer Barnhill.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding while our staff takes time to celebrate this special milestone.

We will reopen Friday for our normal adoption hours.
