Adding distance and distraction to that down with the implied stay.

Implied stay? What does that mean?

An implied stay is just what it sounds like.
I tell the dog to follow a command, in this case “down”. Without giving a “stay” command, I begin to add some distance and motion. My expectation is for the dog to hold the down until I give them another command or release them.

I do also teach a “stay” command but this is a helpful tool that will help build duration of your basic commands.

When cars make your dog nervous, find a location that you can get some distance between the cars and your dog and let them start to normalize the sounds, smells and movement. Don’t rush them and throw them in the “thick of it”. Be a teammate and build their confidence a little at a time. Harbor used to bolt the other direction at the sight of a car. Now she is confident enough just to sit and watch them go by and take in the noise, smells and movement of the vehicles… and all without me glued next to her to draw confidence from.

Harbor went from bolting and avoiding going on walks to being able to go on a decent little walk and not being panicked the whole time! Woohoo Harbor!

Making these sorts of transitions is challenging for any dog that is in a state of excitement but for young dogs it can be especially challenging.

Sam Moon sure enjoys helping the pups learn about putting “place” into practice.

For young pups especially, this is quite boring work. For their owners, this will become a skill they can use daily to help make living with their dog a little easier.

Of course since the girls were excellent and appropriately handling various distractions/movements and such, they were given beef knuckle bones to enjoy for a little while.

Harbor is a wired up little girl and she loves to show off her zoomie, parkour and other CRAZY skills any chance she gets.
Part of her board and train program is her integrating with our household. We have movie nights, game nights and all of those things that are going to help Harbor get the feel for what is expected in her day to day life with her own family.
