West Nile is confirmed in our area. Make sure your horses are vaccinated against this mosquito born disease. There is no cure for West Nile, only supportive care. Monitor horses closely for any neurologic symptoms.
The only preventative measure is a yearly West Nile vaccine, or every 6 months in high risk areas or in times of disease outbreak.

It’s not uncommon to find horses and ponies living well into their 20s and 30s, thanks to continuous advances in nutrition and health care.

Horse owners have a big impact as well and can help their horses thrive in their golden years through proper management practices like those illustrated in the graphic. But remember: although there is much you can on your own do to keep your older horse happy and spry, some conditions associated with aging require medical intervention.

Scheduling regular visits and keeping a good line of communication with your veterinarian will allow you to respond quickly to any ailments or injuries that could cause your horse a serious or prolonged set back. That means less worry for you, and a better quality of life for your old friend!

Wolf Teeth vs. Canine Teeth — not the same thing!

Wolf teeth are small and sit just in front of the cheek teeth on the maxilla (top jaw). They sit far enough back it can be very difficulty to visually see them

Canine teeth are larger, pointed teeth found in the gap between incisors and cheek teeth — most common in geldings and stallions.
These are easily observed and commonly confused as wolf teeth.

Pictured below is a very rare occurrence of a large wolf tooth on the lower jaw.

Routine dental exams help keep your horse comfortable and performing their best.
