🚨 DO NOT COME TO ME IF YOU REFUSE TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR YOUR DOG.

And yes—this especially applies to poodle mixes but all dogs.

‼️‼️‼️I have AMAZING doodle clients but recently I have been seeing an influx of new doodle clients ruining that track record‼️‼️

Accountability means:

-Understanding that poodle-type coats are among the highest-maintenance coats we see in grooming. The combination of FUR & HAIR coat requires consistent brushing, combing, grooming, and maintenance at home AND in the salon.

-Understanding because of mix hair types they’re more prone to excessive hair in the ear canals and infections. Sometimes that hair cannot be safely removed by a groomer—or even by your veterinarian while your dog is awake.

-Understanding that I will advocate for your dog, even when that means telling you something you don’t want to hear. Your dog’s safety and comfort will always come before finishing a service.

-Understanding that I will stop a service and refer you out when I cannot safely perform it. I am not going to wrestle, overpower, or traumatize your dog just so I can say I finished the groom.

-Understanding that dog groomers are not dog trainers. We can work with your dog, build trust, use cooperative handling, and encourage good behavior—but training and desensitization between appointments are ultimately the owner’s responsibility and should start WITH THE OWNER as soon as the dog is acquired so often as 8 weeks old. (This is ALL breeds but especially high maintenance coat types)

-Understanding that sometimes refusing to address an issue at home can eventually mean a $400+ veterinary bill for sedation because your dog won’t tolerate something that needs to be done. (Aka: ear plucking)
If you can’t safely do it, I can’t safely do it, and your vet can’t safely do it awake, sedation may become the only humane option. And that is not my burden to bare because YOU didn’t understand what you were getting into and YOU won’t hire a trainer to help you both (and me but hey F me right?)

-Understanding, starting off a relationship with a new groomer by bashing an old groomer, especially in reference to any of the above is a massive RED FLAG.

IN CONCLUSION:
I will ALWAYS do everything reasonably and safely within my ability to help your dog.

What I will not do is accept blame because you don’t like the consequences of something I warned you about, couldn’t safely perform, or recommended you address elsewhere.
I am not the one, the two or the three in sugar coating YOUR feelings when my job is to help your dog feel safe & healthy.

OWN THE COAT.
OWN THE TRAINING.
OWN THE MAINTENANCE.
OWN THE RESPONSIBILITY.

Because if the expectation is that the groomer carries all of that responsibility while the owner carries none of it, I may simply have to stop accepting new poodle mixes altogether.

I love these dogs. But loving them means advocating for them—not enabling their owners. 🐩❤️

🍄 Hi! Let me introduce—or reintroduce—myself… again. 😆

🍄 My name is Vanessa — not Nova.
Nova is my Bichon mix who got me into grooming. I am the “Co.” in Nova & Co. 💅

🍄 I’m 36 — April Ta**us ♉️

🍄 I’m a mom of SIX. Biological, step & foster kids… we catch ’em all. 😉

Ages 18, 12, 11, 10, 8 & 7. All girls except ONE son — and naturally, he’s the youngest. 😂

🍄 I’m married to a wonderful man from Zambia, Africa. 🇿🇲❤️

🍄 And because apparently one wedding date wasn’t enough for us, we have TWO:

💍 10/25/25 — My stomach perforated while I was getting my makeup done. I somehow made it through the ceremony before leaving in an ambulance while our guests enjoyed the reception, completely clueless about what was happening. They thought we were off taking pictures. 🙃
Meanwhile, we were checking in for emergency surgery and my 10-day all-inclusive hospital stay. 💁🏻‍♀️

💍 01/17/26 — Wedding 2.0. Our redo, and everything we ever dreamed of. 💓

🍄 I’m one of three siblings with two older brothers.

🍄 I’ve loved animals for as long as I can remember. My kindergarten show & tell I demanded to bring in a live lamb from my grandpaps farm🐑

🍄 I spent my teen years helping a kids’ camp run their horse program and day camps. I also played basketball, volleyball, the flute, and threw rifle in colorguard.

🍄 I started my first vet tech job at 18, and spent the next decade and a half working in pretty much every facet of veterinary medicine.

🍄 I also said I would NEVER be a groomer (not for lack of respect total opposite I couldn’t compute how they did what they did). 🫠
I also said I’d never have more than one child too, so at this point I should probably stop saying “never.”

🍄 I went into human cosmetology school but missed working with animals. Then I had my AH-HA moment:

✨ Cosmetology + animals = GROOMING. ✨

🍄 I opened Nova & Co. in 2023, specializing in creative grooming. 🎨🐩

🍄 I still work two days a week in veterinary medicine as a surgery technician & receptionist.

🍄 When I actually have time to read, give me SJM, fantasy & dark romance. 📚

🍄 I LOVE documentaries. Pretty much all of them.

🍄 I have POTS — Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.
Salt = life. 😆

🍄 I love to sing and possess a wonderfully mediocre voice. Unfortunately for my children and grooming clients, this has never stopped me. Sing like no one’s listening right?! 🎤😂

🍄 I’m loud, outgoing, opinionated and sarcastic — but also extremely empathetic. I like to think I’m basically a kind, squishy interior wrapped in a hard, sarcastic exterior. 😆

🍄 And finally, the current pet situation:

🐱 7 cats
🐶 3 dogs
🦎 1 reptile

Because apparently six children weren’t enough dependents. 😂

🍄 And yes, I deliberately chose a picture that has absolutely nothing to do with grooming because it is one of my favorite pictures ever taken.

I like to call it:

❤️ “Little Red Riding Hood and HER Wolves.” 💅🐺

And there you have it. I have now told the internet my entire life story.

The test will be passed out shortly. 😉😉
