Great job to everyone that answered this week’s trivia question! The answer is D, Hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is the condition where the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones to properly control the body’s metabolism. This condition is extremely rare in cats with hyperthyroidism (the over production of thyroid hormones) being much more likely.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, so before the month comes to an end, we are taking a moment to acknowledge and remember those in the veterinary field who have died by su***de and those who continue to struggle with their mental health.

As many as 1 in 6 veterinarians consider su***de at some point in their career, which is much greater than the general population.

Why is the su***de rate so high in the veterinary profession?

• Moral distress: Veterinarians and staff want to do what’s best for their patients, but oftentimes that simply isn’t feasible due to client financial constraints, patient cooperation, or compliance with a treatment plan. Having to make difficult decisions when you know what you would ideally like to do, but cannot, can be emotionally exhausting.

• Burnout: Veterinarians are constantly pressured to take on more and more appointments. Even with a fully booked schedule and an understaffed team, veterinarians will often still see overbooked appointments for same-day or urgent-care cases. This can result in veterinary professionals staying well past their shifts, missing scheduled lunch breaks, and struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Veterinarians are also frequently contacted by clients outside of business hours with questions or concerns that may require an appointment.

• Financial struggles: Veterinarians undergo extensive schooling and can graduate with significant student debt, while earning substantially less than human physicians with similar educational requirements. Financial stress can add another layer of pressure to an already demanding career.

• Negative client interactions: We understand that when your pet is sick, emotions can run incredibly high. Unfortunately, veterinary professionals can sometimes become the target of anger, frustration, and verbal abuse when a pet has a poor outcome or when treatment costs are higher than expected. Veterinarians do not control the cost of medications, laboratory testing, or other treatments, yet they are sometimes accused of being “only in it for the money.”

• Social media and cyberbullying: With social media, a frustrating experience can quickly turn into a public post or online review. “Vet bashing” has become increasingly common, and veterinary professionals can be subjected to harassment and cyberbullying that follows them long after they leave work.

So, what can you as a pet owner do?

Remember that your veterinary team is human, too.
When you are scared or frustrated about your pet's health, it is completely understandable to have strong emotions. But please remember that the person sitting across from you cares about your pet and chose this profession because they want to help animals.
Ask questions. Express your concerns respectfully. Let us know when you are struggling financially so we can discuss what options may be available. And when your veterinary team goes above and beyond for you and your pet, tell them.

A kind word, a thank-you, or simply recognizing the difficult work that veterinary professionals do can mean more than you realize.
We don't expect our clients to agree with every decision or never feel frustrated. We simply ask that we extend the same compassion to the people caring for our pets that we hope to receive when we are the ones who need help.

Veterinary medicine is a profession built around caring for others. Let's remember to care for the people behind it, too. ❤️

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of su***de or experiencing a mental health crisis in the U.S., call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
