Today is World Rabies Day, a reminder that protecting pets also helps protect our communities.
Rabies is preventable, but it is still present in Indiana wildlife. So far in 2026, 20 bats have tested positive for rabies in Indiana, compared with 12 during all of 2025.
There are simple steps we can all take to reduce the risk: keep pets current on their rabies vaccinations, spay/neuter pets, supervise them outdoors, avoid interactions with wildlife, and seek veterinary care if your pet may have been exposed.
Spay/neuter plays an important role, too. A spay/neuter appointment is an opportunity for pets to receive essential vaccinations and other basic veterinary care, helping keep pets, families and communities safer.
This World Rabies Day, take a minute to check your petsโ vaccination records and make sure theyโre protected. ๐๐พ
