Green Lake Area Animal Shelter

The vision of the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter is a community in which all pets are considered part of the family, are provided with compassionate care, companionship, training, and are spayed or neutered. We also seek to become the Green Lake area's primary facility for pet adoption, and to be considered a reliable, credible resource to address any animal issue.

It’s me again… Brutus!

I hear a bunch of dogs and cats are heading off to foster homes, and honestly, I’m a little jealous.

Don’t get me wrong, the people here are nice, but shelter life is stressful. There are dogs barking, dogs howling, and dogs screaming… it can be a lot for a guy like me. I do my best, but I would really love a break from all the noise.

Even if someone could take me home for just a few days, it would mean the world to me. A quiet place to relax, stretch out, and remember what it’s like to be part of a family again.

Of course, what I really want is a forever home. A place where I don’t have to wonder when it’s my turn. A place where I can finally unpack my bags and stay.

If you’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting, maybe you’ll consider me. I promise I’ll be grateful for every couch, every treat, and every bit of love you have to offer.

Please share my post and help me find a foster home, a sleepover, or even better—a forever family.

If you are interested in adopting Brutus, please visit GLAAS.org to fill out an adoption application. Once your application is approved, a staff member will contact you to schedule an appointment.

It’s natural to want to help a loose dog—but transporting them out of the area can actually make it harder for them to get home.

Heyyy sooo, I know you have heard about me before, but I’m Mishka! Or, as SOMEONE insists on calling me, Mishka Dee Reesh! I honestly have no idea where she got that from, but this woman says it to me daily. Every. Single. Day.

My friends also call me DAWG.

Just kidding. They call me Bear.

I mean, have you seen me? I’m fluffy, I’m large, I lumber around like I own the forest, and I would happily spend my day playing with toys and lounging around.

I was originally purchased from Petland, and although I thought I was a pretty solid dog, here I am at a shelter looking for a home. I’ve been with a few different families throughout my life, so meeting new people can be a little scary for me. The truth is, I’ve had to start over more than once, and that can make a girl a little cautious.

I’ve actually been in the shelter system since January, when I was officially surrendered. But my shelter story started before that. Last summer, I came here as a stray and eventually went back home. Then in January, I found myself here again. This time, my family made the difficult decision to leave me at the shelter because they felt it would be best for me to find a new home.

A lot of people thought I’d be adopted right away because, well, look at me! But there are a few things you should know. I like to take my time getting to know new people and situations. Once I realize you’re a friend, I’m happy to be by your side, but I appreciate having a minute to figure things out first.

I should also be honest and tell you that cats are not really my thing. I tend to think they might be toys, which they definitely are not. I also don’t always understand how big I am, so a home without cats would be best for everyone involved.

Now let’s talk about the important stuff. I LOVE to play. It can be hotter than the Sahara Desert outside, but if someone brings out a good toy, I am absolutely taking that opportunity to PLAY. Life is too short to pass up a good game.

I’ve lived with other dogs before, and I’ve even had kids of my own… puppies, that is! Thankfully, those days are behind me now because I am spayed.

What I really want is a family willing to give me a chance. I’ve had a few homes, a few fresh starts, and now I’m hoping the next one is forever. Someone who understands that I might need a minute to warm up, but once I do, I’m a pretty great friend to have around.

Love,

Mishka ♥️

Psst!!!

It’s us again, Estee and Ulta, and our new friend Gizmo!

We wanted to share some exciting news—one of us and our brother (not pictured) have a potential adoption pending! We’re so excited!

We love it here at GLAAS, especially because we get to have pool parties, but some of the other dogs have been talking… and Nova and Mishka are really hoping their turn comes soon.

You know those big bear-like dogs? Nova the Saint Bernard and Mishka the Akita! Believe it or not, these beautiful purebred girls are still waiting for someone to apply for them. Nova is our biggest neighbor, and Mishka is just as impressive. They both dream of having a home of their own—especially one with central air and a comfy couch to nap on.

So please share this post and tell your friends that GLAAS has BEARS available for adoption! (Okay, not actual bears… but they’re pretty close.)

Keep an eye on our website, because Gizmo will be making his debut in a few weeks! In the meantime, help us spread the word so some of our other shelter friends can get noticed, too.

Stay cool, friends!

"It is just a free kitten on Facebook! Why are you so upset! Mind your own business!" (How many times do I hear this a year? A hundred?)

Do you know WHY rescuers get so upset when they see "free kittens" on Facebook or Craigslist? - ALL year, rescuers volunteer their time and energy trying to spay/neuter the maximum number of animals in our communities. It is exhausting work. The owner paperwork, the transport, the clinics, hundreds of cats per a year being loaded and unloaded. Rescues are trying to help the community dig themselves out these cats. We do it because we love animals. We want to see less suffering.

And then someone allows their one female cat to give birth. And then a hundred other people do the same (because it is just one female cat and it just a few kittens, right?) ....And now we have a 500-700 unaltered kitties heading right back out to the community.

Undoing ALL that work. All that time. All those hours. Rescuers get calls about cats dying during pregnancy. Kittens not being cared for after birth. Kittens suffering outdoors and injuries and viruses and all sorts of horrible, haunting stories. A huge contributor to all that suffering?.... Free kittens 😢

While there is no national database tracking spay/neuter, animal welfare professionals note that the vast majority of kittens given away for free online do not get spayed or neutered.

We have reached the time of year (June/July/Aug/Sept) where most rescuers are drowning in kittens. Which means, many rescuers are forced to helplessly watch kittens being given away online. It is such a horrible thing to watch, seeing all that hard work, tossed out the window. More kittens entering the community, a vicious cycle of free kittens producing more free kittens 😭😭

Please spay and neuter. Be part of the solution. Help your community get ahead. There is no way out of this unless we are all doing our part. The animals count on each and every one of us. ❤️🙌

Today we took in 22 cats from a local emergency situation. While we are grateful to be able to help these animals, we still need to return to the home to bring the remaining cats to safety.

At this time, we are unfortunately **placing all new cat intake requests on a waiting list**. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, but we are currently at capacity and it would not be safe or responsible for us to take in additional cats right now.

Many of the cats we took in today are not yet spayed or neutered and will require extensive veterinary care before they are ready for adoption.

**We are not accepting applications for any of the cats pictured at this time.** Please allow us time to assess their medical needs, provide necessary treatment, and help them settle into their new environment.

We have received **SO MANY donations** over the last few days, and we are incredibly thankful for the outpouring of support from our community. Whether you donated supplies, purchased items from our wish list, sent gift cards, shared our posts, or offered words of encouragement, please know that your support is making a huge difference. Your generosity is helping us provide care for these cats and prepare for the cats that still need our help.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support as we work to help these cats receive the care they deserve.

Hey, hey! It’s me, Remi!

I’ve been waiting for a home for NINE whole months now. That makes me the longest-waiting dog currently available for adoption at GLAAS.

On Friday, I got to come home with one of the GLAAS staff members for a little break, and let me tell you… that shelter environment is a little too crazy for me. I really enjoy the quiet life.

Here are a few things you should know about me:
• I sleep great in my kennel at night.
• I’m reliable off leash.
• I LOVE to play ball.
• I listen like a champ.
• I know sit, lay down, drop it, get your ball, and kennel, and I absolutely love learning new things.
• I walk phenomenally on a leash when I’m wearing my Easy Walk harness.
• We did a DNA test, and I’m a mix of Labrador Retriever and Australian Cattle Dog.

Now, I’ll be honest… I don’t really like other dogs. I want all the attention to myself! I’d also do best in a home with older children, as little kids really aren’t my thing. And being picked up? Yeah… I’m not a huge fan of that either.

I could potentially live with cats that won’t challenge or bully me. If everyone respects each other’s space, I think we could make it work.

If you’ve seen me at GLAAS, you’ve probably noticed I have a lot of energy. The truth is, I’m a completely different dog in a home. Once I’m out of the shelter environment, I settle down very easily and am happy to relax with my people.

I’m about 2½–3 years old, and I’ve even taken a few classes at A Dog’s Tale LLC. My foster mom says I’m a great dog, and it makes her very sad that I’m still waiting for a home. She tells me several times a day that if she could keep me, she would.

I think she’s a little crazy… but she understands me.

If you think we might be a good match, please fill out an adoption application on our website and wait for GLAAS to call you to schedule a visit. I’d really love for my next sleepover to be my forever home.

🚨 HELP! WE ARE ABOUT TO BE FLOODED WITH CATS! 🚨

Our shelter is preparing for a large intake of cats and kittens of many ages, and we desperately need adopters to help us make room.

🐾 SPECIAL REDUCED ADOPTION FEES (WITH AN APPROVED ADOPTION APPLICATION):

🐶 Dogs 1 year and older: $100
🐱 Cats: $5 each (Bonded pairs for $10)

Many of our cats are bonded to one another and have formed special friendships while waiting for homes. We encourage adopters to consider keeping these companions together whenever possible.

Every adoption opens up space for another animal in need. If you’ve been thinking about adding a furry family member, now is the perfect time to help save a life.

Visit GLAAS.org to fill out an adoption application. Once your application is approved, our staff will contact you to schedule a visit.

‼️‼️Please do not come to the shelter to view cats or dogs without an appointment. Animal viewing is by appointment only at this time.‼️‼️

Please share this post and help us spread the word. The animals need our community now more than ever.
