FAQ: a question that I get on a pretty regular basis is can I stay with my dog for grooming?

Unfortunately, the answer is always no!

The main reason is safety. Safety for me and safety for the dog. Grooming in an of itself is already dangerous. I am using razor sharp scissors and pointy clipper blades near eyes, ears and pads. You already have a dog that is potentially dancing all over the place, and trying to dodge every cut and every stroke of the clippers. Grooming requires my 100% focus at all times. Having an owner there distracts me, which can cause me to get bit and excites the dog, which is a recipe for distaster.

A lot of times the owners will say their dog is anxious which is why they want to stay. A majority of the time the anxiousness comes from the owner, thus creating anxiety in the dog. Again, making an already difficult job even more so.

And finally, as a small business owner with no employees, my insurance does not cover other people in the grooming area. Accidents can and do happen and I’m not willing to put myself or my business at risk.

As all of my local clients know, we have a huge issue with veterinary care in our area. There simply was not an option for emergency care other than going to Blue Pearl in Appleton, which is subpar at best.
Last night, my girls labor stalled, and we needed to seek treatment. We went to VEG, the new emergency vet on the east side, and I was so impressed. We walked in and they began working on my girl immediately to figure out the issue and resolve that as quickly as possible. Every member of the staff was kind, concerned and courteous, and in my opinion went above and beyond to help us and have the best possible outcome. The price was also quite reasonable compared to Blue Pearl.
So this morning, we have six beautiful puppies, five girls and a boy that are healthy and thriving thanks to them.

🐾 A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE ON GROOMING PRICE INCREASES 🐾

This post is for everyone.

It’s for the groomers I see every single day stressing over how to tell their clients they need to raise their prices.

And it’s also for the dog parents who are wondering why their groom suddenly went up $5, $10, or sometimes more.

Because I’m a groomer and business owner too, and I can promise you: price increases are dreaded.

We don’t enjoy doing them. They’re awkward. We know there will be questions. We know there may be backlash. We know some clients may even get upset enough to leave and find another grooming shop.

Nobody is sitting behind the grooming table excited to send out a price increase.

But groomers everywhere are being forced to adjust — and this is one small example of why.

I took a few minutes this morning and compared shampoo pricing from 2024 to 2026. I pulled examples from three major grooming brands at different price points — not just the most expensive luxury products.

And across the board, prices have gone up.

In some cases, dramatically.

And please remember:

THIS IS JUST SHAMPOO.

This doesn’t include conditioner.
Brushes.
Combs.
Clippers.
Blades.
Shears.
Bows.
Bandanas.
Cologne.
Ear cleaner.
Nail supplies.
Dryers.
Grooming tables.
Tubs.
Equipment repairs.
Utilities.
Insurance.
Software.
Towels.
Laundry.
Cleaning products.

The list goes on and on.

Groomers aren’t getting hit with a little $2 or $5 increase here and there anymore. Some of the professional products we depend on have climbed $15, $30, $40+ per container in only a couple of years.

And these aren’t optional purchases.

If we want to continue providing your dogs with safe, professional grooming and quality products, we have to buy them.

That’s the part I think sometimes gets missed.

When we reorder shampoo, we may notice it costs more than last time, sigh a little, and hit “buy” because… what else are we going to do? We need it to work.

But when that happens over and over again, on product after product, month after month, while our grooming prices stay exactly the same for years, something eventually has to give.

Our bills go up.
Our supplies go up.
Our equipment goes up.
And if our prices never move, our actual income goes down.

So to the groomers who feel guilty about raising your prices: look at the numbers. You still have to make a living. You still have bills to pay. You still deserve to run a healthy, sustainable business while providing the level of care you’re proud of.

And to the clients who see a $5 or $10 increase and wonder why:

This is why.

Most groomers aren’t raising prices because they suddenly decided they want to charge more just because they can.

They’re doing it because keeping a grooming business open in today’s economy costs significantly more than it did even two years ago.

We love your dogs. We love what we do. And we want to keep doing it.

But in order to continue giving your pups the quality care, products, time, equipment, and attention they deserve, our pricing sometimes has to grow right along with the cost of providing that care. ❤️🐾

A price increase isn’t always greed. Sometimes it’s simply what allows a small business to keep its doors open.

“But I don’t need a show dog. I just want a pet.”

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite statements I hear when talking with potential puppy families.

Because somewhere along the way, people started believing that thoughtfully bred dogs are only for the show ring.

I’m not just producing “show dogs.” I’m producing well-bred PETS.

Dogs that will sleep on your couch.
Raise your kids.
Go on family vacations.
Retrieve ducks.
Compete on the weekends.
Hike with you.
And, hopefully, spend many healthy years simply being your best friend.

The ribbons are not the point.

They are evidence of the work behind the pedigree.

When I plan a breeding, I’m not looking at two dogs and thinking, “They’re both cute. Let’s make puppies.”

I’m looking at generations of pedigrees.

I’m studying structure, temperament, health, working ability, breed type, strengths, weaknesses, and what each dog could potentially contribute to the next generation.

I’m asking:

Where could this dog improve structurally?
What does the other dog bring to the pairing?
What traits have consistently appeared throughout these pedigrees?
Are these dogs physically and mentally representative of what their breed was developed to be?

And health testing means a whole lot more than, “My vet says my dog is healthy.”

Ethical breeders invest in appropriate health clearances and evaluations performed by qualified professionals — including assessments of hips, elbows, eyes, hearts, genetics, and other breed-specific concerns.

Then there are the hours outside of breeding.

The dog shows.
The sporting events.
The gun dog training days.
The entry fees.
The specialists.
The travel.
The veterinary appointments.
The training.
The missed sleep.
The years spent studying pedigrees and learning the dogs behind them.

Why?

Because ethical breeding is preservation breeding.

It is intentionally trying to preserve the health, temperament, structure, instincts, and characteristics that make a breed what it is.

And yes — many of those carefully bred puppies will become “just pets.”

That doesn’t mean they deserve any less thought behind their creation.

Your family pet deserves a breeder who cared about its health before it was ever conceived.

Your family pet deserves generations of thoughtful decisions behind it.

Your family pet deserves parents who were evaluated for more than their ability to reproduce.

Your family pet deserves a breeder whose goal extends beyond producing a litter and collecting a check.

I also understand that families have budgets. But choosing a puppy based primarily on what is available right now and what fits a predetermined price can mean overlooking what actually went into producing that puppy.

Sometimes the responsible choice is to research longer.

Sometimes it is to save.

Sometimes it is to get on a waiting list.

Sometimes it is to walk away from a litter even when those puppies are adorable.

Ethical breeding is not quick profit.

Done correctly, it is years of investment, education, evaluation, disappointment, success, travel, training, testing, and careful decision-making — all for puppies that we hope are better because of the choices we made.

So the next time you hear someone say,

“I don’t need anything fancy. I just want a pet.”

Remember:

A pet is not “just” a pet.

That dog may spend the next 10–15 years sleeping beside you, playing with your children, traveling with your family, and becoming part of some of the most important memories of your life.

If anything deserves to be bred thoughtfully, it’s that dog.

Support breeders who health test.
Support breeders who prove their dogs.
Support breeders who study pedigrees.
Support breeders who are willing to NOT breed a dog when it isn’t the right choice.

And before supporting a breeder simply because the puppy is cheaper, available sooner, or “just going to be a pet,” ask yourself:

Do I really want to save money on the part that determines how this dog came into the world?

Reminder that there will be no services available November 2-8.

Also, I will be taking a few days off at the end of next week for the birth of our puppies. Likely Thursday through Sunday, so there will be no grooming available during that time. Please plan accordingly.

Bringing back the educational posts from last year. Some are too good not to share again. also love if you guys would post your questions here or send them in a private message and I will use them throughout the month.

Today we will begin with nails. Nail trims are a necessity to keep your pet comfortable and healthy. As you can see from the picture, these nails are extremely long, causing them to grow to the side, causing extreme pain when the dog is walking. Nails this long can also be easily broken, causing pain and blood loss.

If your dog is on an eight week grooming schedule that is usually sufficient for nail trims, however, if your dog is not regularly groomed, they should be getting regular nails trims.
