Doesn’t look like much but this point in training my is one of my favorites. When a dog decides (at its own pace) to cruise with me instead of all the territorial posturing (marking, pooping, grass scratching, tail up, ears up, investigating everything etc.) I know I have gained his trust and we’re able to take things to another level.

The first few steps on our walk he gave me a couple of endearing nose bumps and I knew from there he finally thinks I’m a good guy.

When a dog is in cruise mode it’s a different type of enjoyment in a “weight off your shoulders” kind of way.

Moments like this is when it makes all the stress in the beginning worth it.

Consider this if you have and/or getting a Great Dane!

Today during class we emphasized the importance of connecting outside behavior (leash reactivity) with inside behaviors (jumping, barking, obnoxious space taking (in kitchens, bathrooms and on couches and beds)).

Sometimes if you work really hard trying to tackle the leash issues and you’re not seeing any improvement it could be imperative that you reevaluate the dogs inside behaviors and see where you could put up more boundaries or clean up listening skills. Some people are unaware of where to look because they have different definition of what “good” is.

Won’t hurt to try, if you’re still struggling in one area do not allow the inside to remain the same. To find the balance of freedom and boundaries is no easy feat but the sweet spot becomes when you can have a dog that listens in all environments and not just where it’s convenient for them.

Proud of my students dedication.

The biggest struggle with the beautiful Freya is how impulsive she was visually. This includes anything that moved to the point where the door was closed when it came to commands.

Becoming aware of the little moments of reactionary behavior was how we are now able to pass dogs which caused he to really blow up.

When it’s all said and done if you have a dog who is reactive to normal everyday things (dogs, cats, kids, motorcycles, bicycles, cars, squirrels etc.) there are other impulsive behaviors they get to act out that we need to be aware of if we are going to help them through the big reactionary moments.

1. Jumping
2. Overly excitable greetings
3. Fence chasing
4. Barking at things from inside the house

Continuing our work with Casey (8 month old aggressive female). We got one of her human introductions on camera.

First we had to establish trust on leash then we had to give her the opportunity and option for the interaction.

If you’re introducing a hesitant dog to a person a few things to consider:

1. Give them the option of not “saying hi.” It’s not big deal if your dog isn’t ready yet. Respect that and don’t force your dog to be touched by strangers.

2. Start with a good sit and talk amongst each other giving the dog the impression that it’s not all about them. 1-3 minutes.

3. Tell stranger not to approach but allow the dog to come to them if he/she wants.

4. Extend your leash length after the dog is calm but be ready to make a correction if the dog goes into barking. Tell them “no” pull them back to your side and put them in a sit.

5. Do not leave the situation (especially after the dog went into barking). Stay for another few minutes and continue your conversation with stranger so dog learns their fear or barking doesn’t dictate what you do.

Week 2 of our reactive dog class is in the books and I’m already proud of how hard these folks are working.

Here we are during our pack walk….take a look at how well all the dogs are heeling.

Including our star boy Mr. Kane.
