As Future Fresh Urban searches for a permanent home. In the meantime, we are working closely with Brown County, along with a local non-profit to address the importance of food security and food systems throughout the area. As we recover from the time change, false Wisconsin springs looking forward to the actual spring. FFU will be offering a non-commitment CSA (community supporting agriculture) as a non-commitment no downpayments, and no risks. It will build a relationship without the financial commitment of that you would get with a traditional CSA. Members can choose to support FFU at their convenience and availability. FAQ

-----How does FFU help with food security and food systems?

FFU wants to promote urban agriculture which can bring a range of health, social and economic benefits to the community. This type of agriculture mitigates food insecurity and increases the affordability and access to fresh food. Do you want the tomato that has traveled 1000 miles or the one that is grown locally by someone you can personally build a relationship with?

----What happens to the produce that is not sold at the market?

FFU strives in freshness, no farmer wants to see his/hers hard work be thrown out to the landfill. If produce is left over, it will be donated after market or the next morning. FFU has a strict turn around rate when it comes to freshness.

----How does FFU help food banks and non-profits?

Educational outreach, Volunteer & leadership roles, Food Donations, Collaborations with events and fund raising.

As we get closer to our last frost date, and the days grow longer the vamp up for a great year in the garden.

Usually I wouldn't complain about the rain but this year's crop is moving very slowly due to- to wet of conditions. Crops are saying heck with this and moving straight to seed with the early hot temps. On the brightside we will have some ready very soon. I saw flowers on the peas this morning, cabbage leaves will be ready .. did you know cabbage leaves help with stomach issues.. broccoli leaves are great for wraps and soup and they cook better than collards. Did you know dandelion leaves are great in saleds? Good thing i planted dandelion for the first time this year im always trying new things. Baby kale and lettuce might be ready this next week as well. The tomatoe stems are quarter size in diameter with the determined crop flowering.

Something new I'm trying this year is polyculture gardening. What is polyculture? It's growing multiple useful plants together in one area. Polyculture has many benefits like reducing pest damage, conservation of the soil and also increasing the yield in a single area. But like many new things it comes with it's challenges, like weeding with so many different types of plants it is almost impossible to pinpoint what is what with out damaging a crop. So I like to see it as a ground cover to help keep the moisture secure on these hot days. Planting polyculture has a science to it you just dont grab a handful of seed and mix it in... (which i thought about it) but you still have to take in consideration about what to plant.
-You want to think about what will fit best in the area.
-Seasonal crops spring summer fall harvests
-Layering your garden with shapes, sizes, above ground, below ground.

Example:
Edible ground cover- radish, greens,
Early Season- brassica cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli
Mid season- beans, onion, Chives, carrots, beets
Herbs & Flowers- dill, parsley, Cilantro, Fennel, Calendula
Late season- broccoli, kale, sprouts, spinach, lettuce
Plants to avoid- nightshade, Melons, squash crops that expand and cover alot of ground

Many crops have started to peak through the soil and compost along side of some wild editable plants.

Garden tip: llama and alpaca manure is better than cow manure because cows can't break down all of there food. It comes with a strong possibility that you will get unwanted plants growing do to the seed that isn't completely digested. But the camelidae family can so you won't have those little surprises within.
