Fruitful checkups make for happy patients! 🍇 While grapes are a beloved treat for many parrots like this white-bellied caique, they are high in natural sugars. Keep them as an occasional treat in a balanced diet rich in high-quality pellets and fresh veggies!

💧 Bearded dragons should always have access to fresh drinking water.

We often hear owners say they don’t provide a water dish because they never see their bearded dragon drink. While you may not see them drink often, you should never remove their access to water, as it is an essential part of proper husbandry.

Worried about humidity?
- Keep the water dish on the cool side of the enclosure
- Make sure the enclosure is appropriately sized and well-ventilated
- Use appropriate heating and UVB bulbs to maintain proper environmental conditions
- Measure the humidity using a hygrometer

While you may not see them drink often, they should always have the opportunity to do so.

What happens when follicles don’t become eggs? 🥚

In captive reptiles, we often see follicles stop developing normally and remain in the o***y instead of progressing to ovulation and egg formation. This is called follicular stasis.

We don’t always know exactly why it happens, but persistent follicles can eventually degenerate and become a source of inflammation and infection. In more severe cases, this can lead to complications such as yolk peritonitis and even sepsis.

Affected reptiles may also show more subtle signs, including reduced appetite, lethargy, or other changes in behavior.

This image was taken after a Red-eared slider spay and shows follicles at different stages of development.

People always ask us how we get our VERY heavy patients to the back 🐢

This 120-lb Sulcata is a little too big for us to carry, but luckily, he follows his smaller buddy everywhere. So his owners brought his best friend along to help coax him down the hallway.

Whatever works, right? 😂

What is a malocclusion in rabbits? 🐰

A malocclusion is when the teeth don’t align properly, causing abnormal wear and potentially leading to overgrown teeth, sharp points, pain, and difficulty eating.

Malocclusions can affect the incisors or cheek teeth and may be caused by genetics, abnormal jaw structure, trauma, or diet.

Diet is a BIG one! Rabbits need unlimited, good-quality grass hay to provide the long, repetitive chewing that helps naturally wear their continuously growing teeth. A diet too high in pellets, treats, or other soft foods can contribute to abnormal dental wear.

Proper nutrition from the start can play a huge role in maintaining healthy rabbit teeth. 🦷🐇
