Well, well, well… look what wandered across my feed. 👀

One of the influential dogs behind the American Boxer—37 AKC champions sired, from a small group of related German imports.

And we wonder how we ended up with a genetic bottleneck. 😏

This right here is part of the conversation I’ve been wanting to have about COI, popular sires, closed gene pools, and what “purebred” has actually cost the Boxer.

I’m planning to get deep into this soon.

Because if we’re going to talk about preserving the Boxer, maybe we should start by talking about how we got here. 🦋

Ch. Utz von Dom, one of several related German imports that created the American Boxer in the 1940s. Utz was himself a multiple BIS winner and sired 37 AKC champions. His owners, John and Mazie Wagner, owned the famous Mazelaine kennel. 🐾
