**We've reached a "come to Jesus" moment at HerpHaven Reptile Rescue and Sanctuary.**

And we need to have an honest conversation with our community about where things stand, what the future may look like, and why we need your help.

The reality is that animal rescue is in crisis. Not just here in Maine, but across New England and throughout the country. Over the past several years, countless rescues have been forced to close their doors, overwhelmed by rising operating costs, dwindling resources, and an unrelenting number of animals needing help.

HerpHaven has not been immune to these challenges.

For the past three years, we have operated at or beyond capacity. The number of surrender requests we receive has continued to grow, while the resources available to meet those needs have become increasingly stretched.

On March 1 of this year, we made the difficult decision to restrict intakes to absolute emergenciesβ€”abandoned animals, strays, and reptiles facing serious medical crises.

**Even with those restrictions, we have taken in more than 90 animals so far in 2026.** And the year isn't over yet.

Over the past six months, we have had numerous difficult conversations about whether we could realistically continue operating the rescue side of HerpHaven. We had actually made the decision to begin winding down rescue operations on January 1, 2027, and shift our focus entirely to the Sanctuary.

That was not a decision we made lightly. It was heartbreaking, but it was also one we believed had become necessary.

On a personal level, the financial and emotional toll of keeping the rescue operating has been significant. My personal finances and mental health have both taken a serious beating this year. I share that not to ask for sympathy, but because I believe it's important to be transparent about what it takes to keep a rescue like ours running.

**The people behind rescue organizations are human, too. We have limits, even when our hearts want us to keep going.**

But something has changed.

With Mr. Drew closing the education center in Poland and no longer accepting surrendered animals, HerpHaven is now the only nonprofit reptile rescue still operating in Southern Maine.

We've looked into the other reptile-specific rescues throughout New England. A Shedding Chance in Connecticut is no longer accepting pet reptiles, having shifted its focus to native species. Forever Home in Rhode Island has announced that it is stepping back from rescue.

That leaves HerpHaven, Serpent Sanctuary in Bangor, and Morphs and Milestones in New Hampshire as the three reptile-specific rescues we've identified that are still operating and accepting surrendered pet reptiles across New England.

And the need for rescue hasn't diminished simply because the number of organizations able to help has.

**Three rescues. Six states.**

Think about that for a moment.

Three organizations trying to provide a safety net for reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates across an entire region.

And behind every surrender request is an animal whose future is uncertain. An animal that may need medical care, rehabilitation, specialized husbandry, or simply a safe place to land.

If rescues like ours disappear, where do those animals go?

That's the question we keep coming back to. And it's the reason we've decided that, despite everything, we're not ready to walk away.

**For now, we are putting our plans to close the rescue on hold.**

Instead, we're pivoting once again. We're looking carefully at what needs to change, what is sustainable, and how we can continue serving the reptile community without sacrificing the well-being of the people making that work possible.

We have some solid ideas in development, and we're hopeful that these changes will allow us to continue providing rescue, rehabilitation, and sanctuary for reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates for at least another year or two.

We aren't going to pretend we have all the answers. We don't. And we can't promise that the road ahead will be easy.

But we believe these animals deserve someone willing to try.

**And that's where you come in.**

We know times are difficult for everyone. We know that not everyone is in a position to donate, adopt, or volunteer. But there are still meaningful ways you can help us continue this work.

❀️ **Choose adoption.** If you're considering adding a reptile to your family, please consider adopting rather than purchasing from a big-box pet store or questionable online supplier. There are so many wonderful animals waiting for homes, and every successful adoption allows us to help another animal in need.

❀️ **Donate if you're able.** Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. Even $5 helps provide food, supplies, medical care, and safe housing for animals who depend on us. Small donations add up, and they truly do matter.

❀️ **Stay connected.** Follow our page, react to our posts, and leave comments. Those simple interactions help our posts reach more people, which means more opportunities for adoptions, donations, and community support.

❀️ **Share our posts.** Especially our adoption listings and fundraisers. You may not be able to adopt or donate yourself, but someone in your circle might be able to. Sometimes a single share can make all the difference.

**We don't want HerpHaven to become another rescue that quietly closes its doors.**

For years, we've been there for animals who had nowhere else to go. We've taken in the sick, the injured, the neglected, the unwanted, and the forgotten. We've celebrated recoveries, mourned losses, and poured more of ourselves into this work than we ever imagined we would.

And we still believe in what we do.

But believing in the mission and being able to sustain it are two very different things.

**We cannot continue doing this alone.**

We're not asking anyone to save us. We're asking our community to stand alongside us so that, together, we can continue being there for the animals who need us.

To everyone who has adopted, donated, volunteered, shared a post, offered encouragement, or supported HerpHaven in any way over the years: thank you. You've helped us make a difference in the lives of more animals than you may ever realize.

We hope you'll continue walking alongside us as we figure out what comes next.

**Because these animals still need somewhere to go. And we're going to do everything we reasonably can to make sure HerpHaven can continue being that place.** ❀️🦎

🚨 BREAKING NEWS FROM BARKSVILLE! πŸ‘»πŸΎ

The Tri-Woof-Wizard Tournament has ended. The House Cup has been awarded. Our brave Dogwarts students have packed their trunks and are finally heading home.

After a month of magical adventures, they were looking forward to a little rest and relaxation...

😼 UNFORTUNATELY, THE CHAOS CATS HAD OTHER PLANS.

While the Barksvillians were away, those mischievous felines discovered a mysterious ancient chest.

πŸ“¦ PANDORA'S POOCH BOX.

Naturally, they ignored every warning and opened it.

BIG. MISTAKE. 😳

A burst of magical chaos erupted from the box, releasing FOUR mysterious monsters into Barksville!

Ghostly figures are appearing in the shadows. Pumpkins are behaving suspiciously. Strange howls echo through the night...

And Halloween is getting closer! πŸŽƒ

πŸ”Ž THE PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION BUREAU IS RECRUITING!

We need brave canine investigators to track down the escaped monsters, follow mysterious clues, solve puzzles, and save Barksville before Halloween night!

🐾 FOUR WEEKS. FOUR MONSTER HUNTS. ONE HALLOWEEN DEADLINE.

Join our October Enrich U Monster Hunt, where purposeful enrichment meets a delightfully spooky adventure!

πŸŽƒ Add Enrich U to your dog's upcoming daycare or overnight care reservations in PetPocketbook to join the investigation!

⚑ Which house will win?

Our students have been sorted.

They've settled into their Houses.

They've been sharpening their magical skills, tackling enrichment challenges, and creating just the right amount of mischief along the way. πŸͺ„πŸΎ

But everything they've done so far has been leading to this...

πŸ† THE TRI-WOOF-WIZARD TOURNAMENT BEGINS THIS WEEK!

Our witches and wizards are about to put their skills to the ultimate test as they represent their Houses in a series of magical challenges:

πŸ¦… Ravenclaw
πŸ’› Hufflepup
🦁 Griffonclaw
🐍 Slobberyn

Every challenge gives our competitors the opportunity to earn valuable House Points as the battle for the Dogwarts House Cup heats up.

Will Ravenclaw outsmart the competition?
Will Hufflepup prove that determination pays off?
Will Griffonclaw charge fearlessly toward victory?
Or does Slobberyn have a few tricks hiding beneath those robes? πŸ‘€

We have absolutely no idea. πŸ˜‚

And that's half the fun.

⚑ DOES YOUR DOG'S HOUSE HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

There's still time to join the competition! Add Enrich U to an upcoming daycare or overnight care reservation and we'll make sure your witch or wizard gets their chance to compete.

Follow along this week as we share House standings, Tournament competitors, behind-the-scenes action, and ultimately crown the winner of the Dogwarts House Cup! πŸ†βœ¨

May the best House win.

πŸͺ„ THE SORTING CEREMONY HAS BEGUN!

The invitations were delivered.

The trunks were packed.

And the students of Barksville have officially arrived at Dogwarts! ✨🐾

But before classes can begin, there's one very important piece of business to attend to...

🎩 THE SORTING CEREMONY!

One by one, our Dogwarts students are discovering their Houses and preparing for a month of magical Enrich U challenges designed to engage their brains, bodies, noses, and natural instincts.

And there's more than magic at stake...

Every challenge gives our witches and wizards the opportunity to earn House Points, bringing their House one step closer to the ultimate prize:

πŸ† THE DOGWARTS HOUSE CUP!

Of course, we're sure this will remain a perfectly friendly competition.
We're also fairly certain that's what they said before the Tri-Wizidog Tournament. πŸ‘€βš‘

Has your pup been sorted yet?

There's still plenty of time to join the adventure! Add Enrich U to an upcoming daycare or overnight care reservation in PetPocketbook and send your pup off to Dogwarts. πŸͺ„πŸ•

And now that our students have been sorted, there's just one little problem...

They need supplies.

Next stop: Diagonilly. πŸ‘€βœ¨

A lot of people know Pawsitive Play today, but you may not know the story behind why it exists. ❀️🐾

My journey with dogs started long before Pawsitive Play.

I began volunteering in dog rescue in 1998. Somewhere along the way, that journey led me to North East Rottweiler Rescue, where what started as volunteering at events became a much bigger part of my life.

I joined the adoptions team, reviewing applications and conducting home visits. From there, I began doing behavioral assessments and fostering dogs myself. Eventually, I became a member of the board and served as interim president.

With every new role, I learned something different.
I worked with dogs who were fearful, misunderstood, or struggling with behaviors that made them more difficult to place. I learned how much patience, knowledge, the right environment, and compassionate handling could change what was possible for a dog.

And those dogs shaped the way I would eventually build my entire business.

There was also one experience with my own dog that drew a very clear line in the sand for me.

Years ago, a trainer fitted my first Rottweiler with a prong collar. During the session, he became curious about something and lunged toward it. The collar tightened around his neck, and he cried out in pain.
I can still remember that moment.

I remember making a promise to myself that no dog in my care would ever be subjected to fear or pain in the name of training.
I didn't know it then, but that promise would become one of the foundations of Pawsitive Play.

Because over the years, that belief has been tested more than once.
I've been part of business relationships where financial priorities and my standards for care didn't align.

I've had clients ask me to use training methods and tools, including shock collars, that went against what I believed was right for their dogs. Instead of compromising, I worked to help those owners see that there was another way and I've had the privilege of watching their perspective change because of what they experienced with their dogs.

I've worked inside traditional daycare environments and seen what happens when group size and volume become more important than the individual dogs within those groups.

And each time, I came back to the same thing:

The dog comes first.

That principle has shaped Pawsitive Play from the beginning.

It's why we keep our daycare groups intentionally small.

It's why we protect the size of our Adventure Walk groups.

It's why we use positive reinforcement and fear-free handling.

It's why we look at the individual dog in front of us instead of expecting every dog to fit into the same program.

And it's why growth has never been worth sacrificing the quality of care we provide.

In 2024, I took the biggest leap yet and purchased the property that would allow me to create the environment I'd envisioned for years.
Pawsitive Play is the culmination of everything the dogs I've worked with have taught me along the way.

Whether I'm working with a rescue dog, a training client, a daycare dog, or a dog who's been part of the Pawsitive Play family for years, my standard is the same:

I care for them the way I would want my own dogs to be cared for.

They aren't numbers on a schedule.

They're individuals with their own personalities, needs, fears, preferences, and relationships with us.

They're family.

And over the years, that philosophy has allowed me to build relationships with clients who want that same level of care for their dogs, people who appreciate knowing that their dog is truly known, understood, and cared for as an individual.

Pawsitive Play has grown and changed over the years, but the promise behind it hasn't.

Convenience, volume, and profit will never come before the wellbeing of the dogs entrusted to us.

That's not just something we say.

It's a standard I've spent my career protecting.

And I'm incredibly grateful to every family who has trusted me and now our team, to care for someone they love. ❀️🐾
