🎃 Halloween is right around the corner! And while the costumes, candy, and trick-or-treaters are fun for us, all that excitement can be a LOT for our dogs.

A few quick reminders to keep your pup safe and happy:

👻 Costumes + crowds can be overwhelming. Even dogs who love people may be unsure about masks, costumes, and lots of activity. Pay attention to their cues and give them space if they need it.

🔔 Create a quiet spot. If the doorbell sets your dog off, give them a cozy space away from the action with their bed, a favorite chew, and some music or white noise.

🚪 Watch those open doors! With trick-or-treaters coming and going, keep your pup secure and make sure their ID tags are up to date.

🍫 Keep the candy out of reach. Chocolate can be dangerous for dogs, and xylitol found in some sugar-free treats is extremely toxic.

🐶 And if your pup is dressing up, make sure their costume is comfortable...and if they aren't enjoying their costume, a festive bandana works too!

Who says pumpkin season is just for humans? 🎃🐶 Your pup wants in on the fall fun, too!

Try these easy Peanut Butter + Pumpkin Training Bites:

🎃 ½ cup plain pumpkin purée
🥜 ¼ cup natural peanut butter (NO xylitol!)
🥚 1 egg
🌾 1½ cups oat flour

Mix, roll thin, cut into tiny training-sized bites, and bake at 325°F for 15–20 minutes.

Pet Commander Training Tip: Keep training treats SMALL! Tiny rewards allow you to reward good behavior more often...and frequent reinforcement can be much more effective than one big reward. (For size, think pea sized for smaller dogs and blueberry sized for larger dogs!)

Picture this: It’s Thanksgiving afternoon. The doorbell rings, family starts pouring in, food is covering every available counter...and your dog is SO excited they don’t know what to do with themselves.

They’re jumping on guests, barking at the door, sneaking toward the food, or struggling to settle while you’re trying to enjoy the day. Suddenly your peaceful family dinner starts feeling like a whole lot of chaos.

And THAT is why fall is one of our busiest training seasons of the year.

It feels like fall just started, but the holidays are right around the corner. Right now is the perfect window to work on the behaviors you don’t want to be managing when your house is full.

Our 15- and 30-Day Board & Train programs cover the foundations of a well-mannered companion, including recall, place, stay, mannerly greetings, leash manners, and more. Then we tailor the training to your dog, working on things like barking, reactivity, or whatever behaviors are causing stress at home.

October fills quickly, so we’ve opened a few extra spots this year to help more families get holiday ready.

If your dog could pack their OWN overnight bag for their vacation at Pet Commander Kennels, what would they insist on bringing? 😂🐾

🎾 Their favorite ball?
🧸 A beloved stuffed animal?
🦴 An unreasonable number of treats?
🛏️ Their favorite blanket?

And speaking of packing, “What do I need to bring for boarding?” is one of our most asked questions.

The answer is simple: All you HAVE to bring is your dog!

We provide high-quality dog food and treats, bowls, and comfortable bedding. You’re also welcome to bring your dog’s own food, bowls, bedding, favorite toy, or blanket to help them feel right at home.

If your dog takes medications or supplements, those DO need to come with them. We’ll administer everything as directed, with no additional medication administration fee.

Basically, whether your pup travels light or needs their favorite blanket to sleep, we’re ready for them. 🐾

One little command. A whole lot of freedom. 🐾

“Place” is one of those skills that can make a huge difference in everyday life with your dog.

It teaches them that sometimes, their job is simply to settle in one spot and wait patiently while you handle what you need to handle. Opening the front door, welcoming guests, cooking dinner, unloading groceries, or keeping them safely out of the way during a busy moment.

And the goal isn’t to keep your dog in “place” all day. It’s to give you a reliable tool you can call on when you need it, so you don’t have to constantly manage your dog.

More skills = more trust. More trust = more freedom. ❤️

That’s why “place” is an important part of every one of our Board & Train programs.

🐾 What’s your dog’s BEST trick?

Of course, we’re big believers in mastering the basics first...sit, down, recall, loose-leash walking, place/stay, and all those important everyday skills.

But training can be FUN, too! 🙌

Shake. Roll over. Spin. Play dead. High five. Put their toys away. 😂

Teaching tricks isn’t just entertaining... it’s also great mental exercise for your dog! Learning something new encourages focus, problem-solving, and engagement, while giving you another fun way to strengthen your bond.

And it doesn’t take long. Just a few minutes of training can give that brain a workout! 🧠🐶

🍂 Cooler weather is coming, and it’s finally the time of year when we WANT to get outside with our dogs! You picture a peaceful walk down your favorite trail...cool air, changing leaves, your pup by your side. Except your dog is pulling you down the trail the ENTIRE time. 😂 Every squirrel, dog or interesting smell has you hanging onto the leash for dear life. Not exactly the relaxing fall walk you pictured, and sometimes it leaves you wondering...who is walking WHO?!

Leash pulling is one of the most common struggles we see, so our trainers are sharing a few of the same techniques we use every day at Pet Commander...things you can practice at home in just FIVE minutes a day:

🐾 Start somewhere boring. Practice in your yard or driveway before adding lots of distractions.

🐾 Reward what you WANT. When your dog walks beside you with a loose leash, praise or reward them.

🐾 If they pull, stop. When the leash relaxes, start moving again. Pulling shouldn't get them where they want to go!

🐾 Change directions. This teaches your dog to pay attention to YOU instead of always charging ahead.

🐾 Keep it short. Five focused minutes can be much more productive than a long, frustrating training session.

🍂 HELLO, SEPTEMBER! 🐾

We know it may not exactly feel like fall outside yet…but September 1st means we're officially allowed to start talking about it, right?! 😂

Cooler mornings, changing leaves, football Saturdays and finally being able to spend more time outside without feeling like you AND your dog are melting…there's just something about fall with a pup.

We want to hear from you...what is on your bucket list with your dog this fall? Maybe you're looking forward to long walks in the park once the temperatures drop, taking your dog along for a weekend adventure, watching football together from the couch, or simply sitting outside and enjoying those first crisp fall evenings.
