Animal Place 💚Kindness starts with you.
🐷501(c)(3) nonprofit farmed animal sanctuary
Without you, there is no us.
📍Grass Valley & Petaluma, CA.

Founded in 1989, Animal Place fills a much-needed niche of farm animal rescue, sanctuary, education, and adoption. Animal Place is one of the largest and oldest animal sanctuaries in the nation. We operate a 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, California, and a 60-acre animal shelter in Vacaville, California. Animal Place extends compassion to all life with a special emphasis on farmed animals. This is executed by providing permanent sanctuary, education, legislation, and appropriate placement of needy animals. Commenting Policy:

Joy has a question for you!

Are you a vegan recipe creator?

If yes, she is in need of your services. Joy is looking for recipes to share with all of her fans. She has many (some say more than 400,000 subscribe to her email list) and she really wants them to make more vegan recipes.

Might be you? Great, drop a comment or message us (Joy's representatives).

This is not a drill. This is 100% for real.

Juniper lived 10 beautiful years in sanctuary - 9.5 years longer than she would have on a farm.

She was left in our driveway with five other turkeys. Oak is now the only one alive.

Juniper was gentle and generally quiet. She sheltered bantam rooster, Radcliffe, beneath her wing. She loved Thank the Turkeys because, pumpkins!

Volunteer Alida spent a lot of time with Juniper and her friends and has this to share, "They need to be treated like individuals. Being around birds who can be themselves highlights the cruelty they endure on farms. I've spent many lovely, lively hours with Juniper. I enjoyed her curiosity, her affectionate nature when she naps on my lap...perhaps similar to the canine and feline friends in your life?

Juniper is an ambassador, having lived 10 years, showing the world she is not faceless but a unique soul who loved her life".

See you in the stars, Juniper.

Kevin arrived at Animal Place in 2021 after being abandoned at an animal shelter, adopted, and then returned again for his aggression towards humans. While one could argue that Kevin occasionally had big dreams of doing a murder, he wasn't particularly adept at aggression.

Kevin was mostly bravado covered in a lot of feathery floof, and his underlying heart condition that was diagnosed shortly after his arrival resulted in a very wheezy, unfortunately not very terrifying crow.

Kevin responded well to medications that managed his congestive heart failure for over five years, which is significantly longer than we had expected due to the severity of his symptoms.

As time went on and Kevin received proper medical care, treatment, and attention, he mellowed out and overall simply enjoyed life with his small flock— being a particularly good rooster to the special needs hens like PC and Otter.

Kevin passed peacefully surrounded by his girls and other rooster friends.

See you in the stars, friend.

Just letting you all know that Tilly is still alive and is now two years old, and our oldest broad-breasted girl is 10-yrs-old.

Someone commented on a post recently that broad breasted turkeys can only live 12 months.

This is an oddly specific number. 🤔

It is true that broad-breasted turkeys are artificially selected to grow fast for early slaughter.

Can they live longer than 12 months?

Well, duh. Yes. They can. Our oldest broad breasted turkeys are NINE YEARS old. Tilly is reaching her first birthday and seems to still be, you know, alive.

Even on farms, broad breasted turkeys live past twelve months. Parent birds (who are all forcibly artificially inseminated, gross) are kept for 1 to 3 years. Farms may still free feed the breeding flocks or put them on restricted diets.

We opt to feed our broad breasted turkeys friends a maintenance diet that keeps them trim and greatly prolongs their lives. They enjoy fresh produce and treats as well as a large pasture to putter around in.

And while they will likely not live as long as heritage breeds, it is simply untrue that broad breasted turkeys only live 12 months.
