Happy World Blood Donor Day!

Today we honor Blood Donor’s across the globe and the invaluable difference they make with each drop. But did you know this applies to our pets, too? That’s right! “Give Blood, Save a Life” can apply to both you and your furry family members! An estimated 3.4 million transfusions occur each year in veterinary hospitals across the U.S. alone. Dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits and many other species can benefit from having an available donor. Trauma, surgical emergencies, anemia, clotting disorders, toxicities, even severe infection, are just some of the conditions for which blood products can mean the difference between life and death for your pet.

Unfortunately, the demand for veterinary blood products far exceeds supply, leading to a critical shortage worldwide. AEHNT is trying to do its part to combat this issue by developing its own, on-site blood donor program. While still in its early stages, this program has already done over 60 collections on various species of animals in the last year alone; allowing us to provide lifesaving transfusions for patients here and at surrounding hospitals. Here are a few of our AEHNT Blood Donor Heros. Please help us show our gratitude by telling them how totally PAW-some they are in the comments!

A special reminder brought to you by Kane and his dad, Kristopher:
Beware of NSAID toxicity!

You hear it all the time, not to give your pets human medications like that of Ibuprofen or Tylenol, but there are also animal NSAID medications that need to be used correctly and under the care and prescription of their veterinarian. Carprofen, Meloxicam, Galliprant and Onsio are some of the NSAIDs used in animal medicine to help with pain and inflammation.

Kane decided to ingest all of his meloxicam and earned himself a stay with us for a few days to receive fluids, monitor his kidney values as well and start medications to protect his GI. Kane was very lucky and able to go home with no damage to his kidneys and very minimal tummy issues.

If you believe you pet has ingested anything toxic, contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

A special Mother's Day delivery featuring Biskit and her mini, Gravy.

First time mom found herself at AEHNT after she started showing signs of active labor with no puppy production after about 6 hours. Radiographs showed a large puppy that was delaying the delivery process and Bisket found herself needing an emergency c-section. Luckily, sweet little Gravy was delivered happy and healthy and able to go home later that day with mom.

Bisket came back for a general checkup with sweet Gravy at her side, who mom is very much smitten with. Her owners happily report that Bisket is a natural in the game of motherhood and are so thankful they brought her in when they did!

Chaos is already living up to his name. Shortly after his family brought him home, he was playing in the backyard with his housemate when he started favoring his back leg. His family suspected a fracture and they were right; poor Chaos fractured his tibia. Thankfully he came to right ER and was able to be treated with our partner clinic, Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, where they were able to fix Chaos up and send him home to rest and heal.

AEHNT's team is always ready to help. Call or visit anytime🐾We are more than happy to help you connect you with the proper specialty care!

Maggie May was not acting like a playful happy bloodhound puppy when her owners brought her home. After a visit with her primary vet revealed she was anemic and in need of a blood transfusion, she found her way to AEHNT in the comforting arms of technician Donna. Maggie Mae was suspected to be anemic secondary to parasitism such as hookworms but with a little support with her fresh blood, she quickly showed us that playful puppy side.

Lluvia is a baby macaw that came in for an injury to her crop. The bird crop is a specialized, muscular pouch at the base of the esophagus used for temporary food storage and initial softening before digestion. After a quick repair, Lluvia woke up from anesthesia with technician Jakoe and when she was steady and awake, went home with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

In celebration of graduation weekend, we would like to send a big AEHNT hoorah to our high school intern, Malaki!

Malaki was with us through Keller ISD's Veterinary Science program. Through this program high school students are provided with hands-on veterinary experiences in real veterinary settings. Through internships with local clinics, students gain valuable clinical exposure while working toward their Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) certification, preparing them for continued education and careers in animal care.

From a young age, Malaki has loved animals thanks to the exposure on his grandparents' farm and has always wanted to become a vet. Next steps include playing football in Arkansas while working on his pre-vet classes.

Best of luck Malaki!

Ralphie was a sweet dachshund puppy that experienced an allergic reaction to something unknown while outside. With a face that swollen you would think he would be pretty miserable, but this handsome boy was all energy and tail wags while he received a few injections to help.

Puppy snuggles are also a great form of medicine here at AEHNT.

On behalf of National Rescue Dog Day, meet Kona!

Kona is a recently adopted puppy that had a tough day of vomiting, diarrhea and not behaving like an energetic young puppy. After a variety of diagnostics, it was found that this sweet face had a nasty bout of hookworms.

Hookworms in dogs are a common type of intestinal worm that can affect dogs of all ages. These parasites feed on blood and can cause anemia, diarrhea, and weakness. Because symptoms can start subtly and worsen quickly, particularly in puppies, it’s important to recognize the early warning signs and seek prompt veterinary care.

If you end up getting a new furry, four-legged companion on this special day, remember to follow up with a wellness exam with your primary vet and avoid a trip to the emergency room.
