Sure feels like winter is around the corner.

Preparing your horses and farm for winter requires managing feed, water, health, and facilities before the first freeze or heavy snowfall.

Horse Health & Care

• Dental and Wellness Checks: Schedule a dental exam so your horse can chew forage comfortably and maintain body weight, and update vaccinations like strangles and botulism.
• Parasite Control: Run f***l egg counts and deworm your horses as needed going into the cooler months according to guidance from GG Equine.
• Hoof Care: Inspect shoes, consider removing them for better barefoot traction on ice and snow, or set up snowball pads and boots.
• Blanket Assessment: Clean, repair, and fit winter blankets (ensuring a snug fit at the withers and shoulders). Remember that healthy, unclipped horses with good forage and shelter often do not need blankets unless they are shivering, older, or clipped.

Nutrition & Hydration

• Stockpile Forage: Store a 10% to surplus of dry hay (averaging 15 to 25 lbs per day for an 1100 lb horse) in a dry, covered space away from the barn to prevent mold, mycotoxins, and fire hazards.
• Water Access: Ensure a reliable 10 to 12 gallons of daily water access per horse. Test tank heaters, bucket heaters, and electrical circuits to prevent freezing, and check for stray voltage.

Shelter & Barn Checks: Inspect 3-sided run-in sheds, roof leaks, and fence lines, and service sliding barn doors, window seals, and barn lights.
