I’ve had several of my sponsored riders tell me they’ve been asked how they got sponsored by GW Performance Horses, what they did to earn it, or how someone else could become a sponsored rider.
Well, I figured I’d explain a little about how I do things.
First and foremost, I don’t sponsor people simply because they ask me for money. I don’t sponsor people who send out AI-generated sponsorship requests without putting their own time and effort into them. I don’t sponsor people who just want the title of “sponsored rider.” And I certainly don’t sponsor people who are rude, disrespectful, or think their accomplishments excuse poor behavior.
Here’s what I do. I watch. I listen. And I remember.
I remember who shows up with a smile on their face, regardless of how their last run went. I remember who treats the entry office staff with kindness, who is respectful in the holding pen, and who offers a helping hand without expecting anything in return.
I remember the riders who put their horses first. The ones who work hard when nobody is watching. The ones who show compassion, humility, and good sportsmanship.
And I also remember the snarky comments, the disrespect, and the way people treat others when they don’t think anyone important is listening.
Because I promise you, I’m listening.
Most of my sponsored riders had absolutely no idea they were even being considered until I handed them a check, some products, or offered to help them in some way.
And sometimes, I don’t even know who I’m going to sponsor until the Lord puts a name on my heart. I don’t announce it. I don’t make a big production out of it. I just pray about it.
Something else I want people to understand is that sponsorship from me doesn’t necessarily mean a $1,000 check, or even a $500 check. Sometimes it’s an entry fee, a product, a little financial help, or simply knowing that somebody is standing in your corner.
I’m not a wealthy man. I work hard for what I have, and there are many times when things are tight. But I’ve always believed that when God blesses you, you should find a way to bless somebody else.
My God asks for 10%, and I do what I can to give more than that. Because no matter how hard you try, you cannot out give God.
Some may disagree with how I choose to tithe, and that’s okay. I don’t direct that giving to my church. I choose to give back to this community.
The same community that has helped me get where I am today. The people who believed in me, helped me grow, and strengthened my faith. Not just my faith in Jesus, but my faith in people, too.
I don’t believe you have to be the fastest rider, own the most expensive horse, the biggest rig, or have a wall full of awards to deserve somebody believing in you.
I believe character matters. I believe kindness matters. And I believe what you do when nobody is watching says far more about you than what you accomplish when everybody is.
So, if you ask me for a sponsorship, odds are you probably won’t get one.
I can’t afford to sponsor everyone, Lord knows I would if I could. But if you show up, work hard, treat people with respect, take care of your horse, and carry yourself with a little humility, you might just be on that list a whole lot sooner than you think.
And you may never even know I’m watching. ❤️
