Finding the Right Pet Care Team Starts with Shared Values!

One of Michiana PAWS' missions is to build a community of trusted referral partners across the pet care industry who share our commitment to positive, science-based approaches to animal care.

Whether you're looking for a dog trainer, groomer, pet sitter, or veterinarian, the professionals you choose can make a big difference in your pet's physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. We believe pets deserve care that prioritizes kindness, safety, understanding, and respect.

We're highlighting some of the professionals and businesses we trust who share these values and are committed to putting animal welfare first. We'll be sharing these industry spotlights as a series, starting with dog trainers! Each flyer will introduce trusted providers and highlight the qualities that make a difference in the care your pet receives.

Our goal is to connect pet owners with professionals who believe in doing better for animals. By building relationships across the industry and supporting one another, we can help create a community where positive, humane care becomes the standard.

Follow along, share these spotlights with fellow pet owners, and help us grow a network of compassionate pet care professionals throughout Michiana!

Your dog’s veterinary visit doesn’t have to be stressful.

At Canine Body and Mind, we offer a different kind of veterinary experience. Private, personalized, and Behavior-Smart.

Busy waiting rooms can add stress before the appointment even begins, especially for shy, fearful, or reactive dogs. That’s why we see one dog at a time.

Your dog has a large private room with plenty of space and time to acclimate to the environment before we begin. There are no unfamiliar dogs coming and going, and no need to rush your dog through the visit.

We offer wellness exams, vaccines, preventive care, senior bloodwork, reference lab diagnostics, treatment for minor illness and injury, and telemedicine for established clients.

If your dog struggles at the vet, or you simply want a calmer, more personalized experience, we’d love to care for them.

Your dog deserves a better vet visit.

At Canine Body and Mind, we see ONE DOG AT A TIME.

No crowded waiting room. No other dogs coming in and out. No rushing your dog through an assembly line of appointments.

Just you, your dog, and our team — with the time and space to work at your dog’s pace.

And we’re excited to share that we can now send samples to a reference laboratory for diagnostic testing!

That means we can offer more comprehensive diagnostics, including annual senior bloodwork, as well as reference-lab testing such as blood tests, f***l and urine testing, cytology, cultures, and more.

Our goal has always been to combine thoughtful veterinary care with a behavior-smart approach — and this gives us another way to provide thorough, personalized care for your dog throughout their life.

A one-dog-at-a-time veterinary experience is a luxury. We know that, and we’re proud to offer it.

Is your dog due for an annual exam? Have you been putting off senior bloodwork or wondering if something “just isn’t quite right”? Now is a great time to schedule.

📅 Book your dog’s veterinary appointment with us today and experience the difference of truly personalized, one-dog-at-a-time care.

❤️ And if you already use Canine Body and Mind and love the experience, please share this post! Your recommendation could help another dog and their family discover a better way to experience veterinary care.

One of the biggest training mistakes I see is asking for too much, too soon.

We teach a dog a behavior a handful of times at home and then expect them to perform it at the park, around other dogs, or in a highly distracting environment. But learning a behavior and being able to perform it reliably in real life are two very different things.

Dogs need repetition, practice, and gradual increases in difficulty to build true competency. The amount of training your dog has received should match the expectations you have for what they can do.

That’s why I love the 5:3 Rule:
🐾 5 successful repetitions in a row → make it a little harder
🐾 3 mistakes in a row → make it easier
🐾 Anything in between → keep practicing at that level

And remember: just because your dog can do something at home doesn't mean they can do it everywhere. If you want a behavior to be reliable in a particular place or situation, you need to practice it there.

Progress doesn't come from constantly testing what your dog can handle. It comes from setting them up to succeed and gradually building their skills.

Check out the handout for a simple guide to building challenges and distractions!

Want a dog who listens—even when life gets exciting?

Good manners aren’t just about knowing how to sit. They’re about building the communication, impulse control, and focus that help your dog succeed in everyday life.

Our Intro to Manners class gives you the foundation to make that happen.

Over 6 weeks, we’ll work on practical skills like:
✔️ Recalls
✔️ Loose-leash walking
✔️ Polite greetings
✔️ Stay & wait at the door
✔️ Leave it
✔️ Matwork
✔️ Sit & down

This class is open to dogs over 9 months of age and is especially helpful for adolescents, young adults, and newly adopted dogs. No previous training required!

And if your goal is a dog who can use these skills around distractions, Intro to Manners is the foundation for Manners 2, where we take those skills into more challenging real-life situations.

📅 **Starts Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 PM**
