If you have a double-coated breed like a Husky, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, or Corgi, an undercoat rake might just become your new best friend!

Why use an undercoat rake?
🐾 Removes loose undercoat before it ends up on your furniture
🐾 Helps reduce shedding around the home
🐾 Improves airflow to the skin and coat
🐾 Helps prevent painful mats and tangles
🐾 Keeps your pup looking and feeling their best

Double-coated dogs naturally shed their undercoat throughout the year, with heavier "coat blows" during seasonal changes. Regular brushing with an undercoat rake helps remove dead fur without damaging the healthy topcoat.

💡 Pro Tip: A few minutes of brushing each week can save hours of vacuuming later!

Stop in and let our team help you find the right grooming tools for your furry friend. Your vacuum cleaner will thank you. 😉🐕

🍂 Why Terrarium Keepers Love Live Oak Leaves 🍂
Looking to create a more natural, functional, and beautiful terrarium? Live oak leaves are one of our favorite additions!
Not only do they provide a realistic forest-floor appearance, but they also serve several important purposes for many terrarium inhabitants:

✅ Natural shelter and hiding places for isopods, springtails, millipedes, and other cleanup crew species
✅ Long-lasting leaf litter that breaks down slowly, providing a continuous food source for detritivores
✅ Helps maintain humidity by creating microclimates and reducing moisture loss from the substrate
✅ Encourages natural behaviors such as foraging, burrowing, and grazing
✅ Supports a healthy bioactive ecosystem by feeding beneficial fungi and microorganisms

Live oak leaves are especially popular for:
🦎 Dart frog terrariums
🕷️ Tarantula enclosures
🦂 Scorpion habitats
🐛 Isopod colonies
🐸 Bioactive reptile and amphibian setups

One reason hobbyists love live oak leaves is their durability. Unlike many other leaf types that break down quickly, live oak leaves can last for months while still providing food and shelter for your cleanup crew.

Whether you're building a tropical rainforest terrarium, a bioactive vivarium, or an isopod culture, live oak leaves are a simple addition that can make a huge difference in the health and natural appearance of your enclosure.

🍂 Stop by Blue Fish Aquarium to pick up live oak leaves and other bioactive terrarium supplies!

What critters are you keeping in your bioactive setup? Let us know in the comments!

🚨 Michigan Pond Plant Update 🚨

Starting June 19, both Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) will become restricted aquatic plants in Michigan. This means they can no longer be sold, purchased, distributed, imported, propagated or possessed.

Why the change? While these floating plants are loved for their beautiful appearance and nutrient-absorbing abilities, they can spread rapidly and create dense plant mats that impact native ecosystems, wildlife habitat, and water quality.

🌱 Important: This restriction also includes Dwarf Water Lettuce. While it may look different from standard water lettuce, it is still Pistia stratiotes and will be prohibited.

The good news? There are many fantastic pond plants that can provide shade, absorb nutrients, support wildlife, and keep your pond looking beautiful all season long. Stay tuned for some great choices for outdoor pond plants!!!

🐟 Betta Fish Care 101 🐟

Bettas may be small, but they need proper care to truly thrive! These colorful little fish do best in heated, filtered aquariums with plenty of space to swim and explore. While they’re often marketed as “easy” pets, a healthy betta setup includes warm clean water, a balanced diet, and enrichment like plants or hiding spots.

One of the biggest myths about bettas is that they can live happily in tiny bowls — but in reality, they’re much more active and healthier in a properly sized aquarium! Watching a betta flare, explore, and show off its personality is one of the best parts of keeping them.

Thinking about starting a betta tank or upgrading your current setup? Stop by and we’d love to help you build the perfect home for your finned friend or shop online: https://bluefishaquarium.com/collections/betta-supplies

Teach Me Tuesday: Meet the Pitho Crab! 🦀

Did you know Pitho Crabs are one of the hardest-working members of a saltwater cleanup crew? These unique little crabs are best known for helping control nuisance algae in reef tanks — especially bubble algae!

Their flat, chunky bodies and tiny spoon-shaped claws make them excellent algae pickers while staying reef-safe with most corals and tank mates. Plus, every Pitho Crab has its own goofy little personality that makes them super fun to watch!

Good news… they’re BACK IN STOCK right now! Stop by and add one of these algae-eating helpers to your reef tank before they’re gone again! 🪸✨
