Perfect article written by AKC (American Kennel Club) about dogs greeting other dogs. Not all dogs want another dog in their space or running right up on them. The "my dog is friendly" excuse is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for your dog, the dog it is running up on might not appreciate the "friendly" space invader.

Although most puppies are dog social, in adulthood most dogs become dog selective or dog tolerant. Some may even become dog reactive.

Good morning all of our Happy Tails friends! I just wanted to let everyone know that after some decision making Happy Tails will not be holding anymore classes this fall. Due to ongoing education and time limits involved with that, the remainder of this fall and winter will be focused on that. Even the ones teaching must learn to keep up to date on doing the best possible for all involved. If you need a class Lisa Maasch with Paw-sitive Way Dog Training has a class starting this week Sept 14th, for Puppy Obedience, Basic Obedience, and a Basic Obedience 2.

Blue-green algae has been spotted at Barker's Island in Lake Superior. Be aware of your dogs and where they swim. With the lack of rain this year, we have lots of stagnant water sources.

Please be very mindful of your pets, don't work them in this extreme poor (actually currently a dangerous levels) air quality we have!

If you can, keep your pets inside, except for potty breaks.

Find fun games to play with your dogs, that are high enrichment games, to help with inside behaviors from boredom. Which can include: hide and seek (you hide have your dog find you,) scent games, snuffle mats, Kong toys, or puzzle games for dogs.

Stay safe and hit the outdoors when it's safe to do so again.

Please read the following from Cornell University about air quality and dog safety
Dog safety during poor air quality alerts or wildfire smoke

When there is an alert for poor air quality, such as from wildfire smoke, the pollution concentrations and particulate matter in the air can reach hazardous levels that are unhealthy for the general population, including our pets.

How might poor air quality or wildfire smoke impact my dog's health?
The risks of poor air quality to pets are similar to those of people, which mainly impact the heart and lungs. While people can wear masks outdoors, which may minimize inhalation of small particulate matter, unfortunately, our pets cannot, which may put them at a greater risk.

Are certain dogs more at risk than others?
Brachycephalic (short-muzzle breeds) such as Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, and geriatric or pediatric animals are more susceptible to poor air quality. Additionally, dogs with pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, asthma, or other conditions affecting the heart and lungs are at an increased risk.

What symptoms should I look for?
The most common signs of exposure may irritate the throat, nose, and eyes, making them red or watery. It can also cause coughing, gagging, a fast respiratory rate even when they are at rest, or difficulty breathing. Contact your veterinarian if you have concerns about your pet's exposure risk or symptoms.

How should I minimize my dog’s exposure to poor air quality?
When the air quality is poor, the best way to protect your pet is to limit their exposure by staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed and limiting outdoor time to only bathroom breaks. It is best to avoid exercise like running or hiking until the air quality has improved. Consider using air purifiers or filters indoors.
