Heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, and infected pets may not show obvious symptoms early on.

The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable. Staying consistent with veterinarian-recommended prevention and testing gives your pet important protection against this mosquito-borne disease.

Have questions about heartworm testing or prevention? Call (616) 363-3831.

Brushing at home is an excellent habit, but it can't remove hardened tartar or fully address disease below the gumline.

A veterinary dental procedure lets the mouth be thoroughly evaluated and the teeth cleaned above and below the gumline, where periodontal disease can develop unseen.

Is your pet due for a dental evaluation? Call (616) 363-3831.

Dogs form strong social bonds with the people they trust, which is part of what makes the human dog relationship so special. Following you from room to room, greeting you excitedly, or simply wanting to rest nearby can all be ways your dog shows attachment. Have questions about your dog’s behavior? Call us at (616) 363-3831.

Yes. Biting is a normal part of kitten development. Kittens use play to learn about their environment and develop bite inhibition. While it may not feel very gentle, this is an important part of growing up.

The best approach is to redirect biting toward appropriate toys and avoid encouraging play with your hands or fingers.

With consistency and patience, most kittens outgrow this stage and learn to play more gently. If you have questions about your kitten's behavior, we're happy to help. Call us at (616) 363-3831.

Flying with your dog takes a little extra planning.

Before your trip, review your airline's pet travel requirements, help your dog become comfortable in their carrier, and arrive early to allow plenty of time for check-in.

If your dog has underlying medical conditions or becomes anxious during travel, talk with your veterinarian well before your departure.

Safe travels start with preparation.

Severe weather can happen with little warning, so having a pet emergency kit ready before you need it can make all the difference.

Keep essentials like food, medications, fresh water, veterinary records, ID tags, waste bags, a leash, and a comfortable carrier or bed in one easy-to-access location. Planning ahead helps ensure your pet stays safe if you ever need to leave home quickly.

Do you already have a pet emergency kit? Let us know what's in yours!

While cats are descended from desert animals, today's house cats still rely on you to help keep them safe during hot weather.

Cats have limited ways to cool themselves. Unlike people, they only sweat through their paw pads and rely on grooming (evaporative cooling) to lower their body temperature. If they begin panting, they're already struggling to cool down, and it shouldn't be ignored.

Help your cat stay safe by keeping them indoors during the hottest parts of the day, providing plenty of fresh water, and making sure they always have access to cool, shaded areas.

📞 If you have questions about keeping your cat safe this summer, call us at (616) 363-3831.

Not always. For many double-coated breeds, including Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, the coat actually helps insulate against heat and protects the skin from harmful UV rays.

Shaving these breeds can increase their risk of:
☀️ Sunburn
🌡️ Overheating
🐕 Coat damage as it grows back

Instead:
✔️ Brush out loose undercoat regularly.
✔️ Keep plenty of fresh water available.
✔️ Avoid the hottest part of the day.
✔️ Provide shade and air conditioning whenever possible.

Not every breed is the same, so if you're considering a summer haircut, ask your veterinarian or groomer first. Questions? Call (616) 363-3831.

Road trips can be stressful for cats, but a little preparation goes a long way. Travel with your cat in a secure, well-ventilated carrier, take breaks only when it's safe to do so, and use a harness and leash if your cat will be outside the carrier. Never allow your cat to roam freely inside a moving vehicle.

Safe travels start with planning ahead.

If you have questions about traveling with your cat, call us at (616) 363-3831.

Let's be honest...

To your dog, you're the favorite person in the world. You're the food provider, the walking buddy, the toy thrower, and the source of endless belly rubs.

If your dog had to describe you in one word, what do you think it would be?

Share your answer in the comments, we'd love to hear it!
