With over 40 years of experience, there is not much he has not mounted. Darryl is not only known for his expertise in the field of taxidermy, but also as a renowned big game hunter with trophies including his 1997 Colorado mountain lion that ranked No. 5 in the world.Darryl’s taxidermy studio is one of the finest you will visit. His collection of Boone and Crockett mounts has been featured in many books, magazines, and newspapers. Darryl has one of the largest collection of B&C Trophy Mule Deer mounts in the West.

Just when I thought we were going to get caught up, we got slammed with 1st season elk. Taylor Fuoco with a big Grand Mesa elk. The Fuoco’s consistently bring us these big elk from the Mesa. Mitch Davis with a trophy 6X6 bull. Isabel Reyes and family with her wide 5X3 elk. (She has bragging rights over her husband Hector’s elk from last year). Trying to keep up with what comes in while getting things completed and out the door. Brock Ahrens with his 6X6 muzzleloading elk. Robert Manuppella (A.K.S, Santa Claus)…. Who is actually a Santa Claus for hire during the holiday season with his 31” muley. Michael LeVan and wife Annie with Michael’s 6X6 Archery elk. Annie guided her husband to this elk in the exact same spot she took her archery cow elk two weeks before. Kim Gold travelled from Texas to pick-up her late husband Ed’s trophy Colorado deer. (Ed passed away just a few months after dropping his deer off but it will be kept in the family for years to come).

Did you ever think about learning Taxidermy? As a career, as a hobby, or just for fun….. mounting your own animals or your friend’s. During hunting season is the perfect time to get involved with and learn all aspects of taxidermy. I’ve been doing taxidermy for over 50 years and I am in business right here in the same location for over 40 years. There are three less taxidermists in this town in the last two and a half years. Plenty of work to be spread around. I have more business than I can handle, and that’s why I’ve started taking in less animals the past two years. In the last 40 years I’ve taught many one-on-one taxidermy courses. Many of these folks opened up their own successful taxidermy businesses. If interested call me at 970-243-2933…. Even though we’re not taking in bears and velvet deer anymore, we’re getting plenty of bow hunting trophies in. Lots of elk, several huge antelope and mountain goats. Here’s a few successful hunters….. Megan Benter and her husband Eric with Megan’s 6X6. Out-of-state hunters Zack McIntire and Danny Wilson with their elk. Jake Turner, Erik Kopperud and Isaac Lawley with their antelope. Darryl and Dave look over some of the European elk brought in the first few days of archery season. Good luck to the muzzleloading hunters this weekend!

Good ole’ Dave, but also poor ole’ unlucky Dave. Dave Hartmann is 0 for 2 on two Alaskan Moose hunts. However his son Ethan has had quite the successful hunts. Their first hunt together a few years ago Dave let his son have the first shot and he got a nice big Bull Moose. No more mature bulls were seen the rest of the hunt! Not to be deterred, Dave booked another moose hunt for him and his son a couple of years later. This time the tag was an either/or moose/caribou hunt. After a few days of not seeing moose, Ethan shot this caribou. For the rest of the trip, no mature caribou or moose were seen. Poor Dave, 0 for 2. But he did find a lovely parting gift/consolation prize……..the skull of a very old wolf. However this does put Dave in the running for “Father of the Year”.
