Justin Eller and his dad Dave with Justin’s Colorado Moose. This big bull was taken in the North Park area. They are currently out scouting for Justin’s upcoming Mountain Goat hunt. Good thing you got dad to help you with the pack out!

Good ole’ Dave, but also poor ole’ unlucky Dave. Dave Hartmann is 0 for 2 on two Alaskan Moose hunts. However his son Ethan has had quite the successful hunts. Their first hunt together a few years ago Dave let his son have the first shot and he got a nice big Bull Moose. No more mature bulls were seen the rest of the hunt! Not to be deterred, Dave booked another moose hunt for him and his son a couple of years later. This time the tag was an either/or moose/caribou hunt. After a few days of not seeing moose, Ethan shot this caribou. For the rest of the trip, no mature caribou or moose were seen. Poor Dave, 0 for 2. But he did find a lovely parting gift/consolation prize……..the skull of a very old wolf. However this does put Dave in the running for “Father of the Year”.

Exactly the mount that Russ wanted. When Russ Rollins brought in his Mt. Goat for a 1/2 lifesize mount he knew right where he was gonna hang it and really hoped we could mount it in a position walking down hill. We found a form in that position but it took lots of extra work and alterations to produce this mount. It will hang about 12 ft high and look down into the room. Just perfect….. we aim to please!

I love the tradition of family and friends hunting together. Pictured here is Jordan Welch and his dad Jeff with Jordan’s Colorado moose taken on the Grand Mesa. Jeff was there to help Jordan with the packing-out duties as Jordan was there for his dad a couple of years ago for Jeff’s successful Grand Mesa moose hunt!

Just in time…..hunting season is right around the corner and the new Rack Cards are out . A few announcements….. Just as last year I’m not taking in bears anymore as well as deer in velvet. These are the two animals that hunters don’t take care of during the hot month of September. I’m continuing to limit the amount of trophies I’ll take in so it’s always a good idea to call first before coming out! Good Luck hunters.

Another heartfelt story from Darryl’s Taxidermy. Pictured with me is local Mark Miller who has been a customer for over 30 years. During those years he’s told me about this huge antelope his dad killed back in 1957. His dad has passed away and he always said he’d bring it in for a remount. He finally brought it in and yes it’s a whopper! Well, after his mom passed away the adult kids were cleaning up the old homestead and found a big buck rack in storage. Obviously they thought dad killed the buck also. Well one night the kids were gathered around looking at old photo albums of the their parents and lo-and-behold there was a picture of their mom with a r***e kneeling beside the big ole’ buck. All this time “mama” had killed that buck…. Got to take it to Darryl’s and get it mounted. The kids will enjoy these treasures for the rest of their lives!

We have an array of critters to mount in the next few weeks. Including Cape buffalo, New Zealand red stags, caribou, mountain lions, Aoudad sheep, African water buck and the usual amount of deer and elk. Shoulder is healing up and the crew is taking up the slack. But I can still point and deligate duties.

Noah Romero stopped by to pick up his lifesize badger mount last week (a few days before my shoulder surgery). A big part of the pleasures of taxidermy is dealing with my customers. Noah and his friends and family are always super cool when they come in with their trophies or picking up their completed mounts…..Thanks y’all!!!

The mountain lion made me do it…..do what you ask? I arrowed this mountain lion the day after Christmas 1997. While packing it out me and the mountain lion fell off a 30 foot cliff (hunting in 2 foot of snow). I crashed through a ponderosa tree, which broke my fall, and landed on my head, which is what saved me because I’m hard headed. Then it was on to the emergency room. With a score of 15 9/16 Pope and Young, it rated (at that time) as the 5th largest mountain lion ever killed. He ranked number 2 all time in Colorado. At that time only President Theodore Roosevelt killed a bigger lion. He killed it in Meeker, Colorado in 1901. In my later years the shoulder has gotten worse and worse. I haven’t been able to work out in 18 months. I lost 12-15 pounds in that time. I’m now on the road to recovery. I’ve got my employees to lean on while I assist with my left hand. Halle will be the boss for the next 2 weeks!
