While celebrating Vet Tech Week, we thought it would be fun to share how someone becomes a veterinary technician. In the past, this role was often learned on the job through hands-on experience, and you could be considered a vet tech without formal schooling. But in 2024, Colorado passed a law protecting the “Vet Tech” title, requiring anyone using the RVT or VT designation to register with the state. To earn credentials, you had to follow the traditional path of attending school or one of two experience-based pathways.

Fun fact: Despite having over 9,000 hours of verified work experience, Sara chose pathway #1 and took the VTNE alongside BreLyn, and both passed with flying colors! This shows how dedicated our team is to learn as much as possible to care for your pets. Way to go, team! 🥳

Veterinary technicians are essential to the daily operations of a veterinary clinic. They take on roles such as phlebotomists, radiologic techs, anesthesia techs, dental hygienists, and so much more!

Their contributions are honored every October during Veterinary Technician Week. From October 18th-24th, we will be celebrating by showing our gratitude to the technicians at our clinic. We deeply appreciate everything they do to care for your pets.💙

Pet obesity is becoming an increasingly common problem in today's world. A 2022 study found that approximately 59% of dogs and 63% of cats are overweight or obese (Larsen, J. A., & Villaverde, C., 2016. Scope of the problem and perception by owners and veterinarians. Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 46(5), 761–772). This condition is closely tied to health issues like diabetes and osteoarthritis. The good news though is it’s completely preventable.

Here are a few ways to help keep pets at a healthy weight in your home!
