🚨 UPDATE: Overflowing with gratitude! 😻
Words cannot fully express how thankful we are for our wonderful community. Our recent fundraiser was a success, and we have raised the vital funds needed to help with the ongoing medical care of the sweet cat who survived such a devastating tragedy.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who donated through GoFundMe ($250) and those who sent direct donations (~$700) by mail. Your kindness is giving this beautiful survivor a second chance at a happy, healthy life. 🐾✨

These two were found dumped on the side of D road, near the Maverick, in this backpack. We understand that if this was their owner's doing, it is unlikely that they will come forward, but have unfortunately experienced situations where beloved pets are taken and dumped by someone other than their owner. Please reach out if you have any information. They were loved at some point. It appears to be a mom and daughter (around 4-5 months old), that are used to people, and seem relatively healthy so far. We would also love to hear from anyone willing to foster, as Loma Cat House is over capacity.

🐾 CHANGE STARTS WITH ALL OF US 🐾

We are hopeful that 2027 will bring more low-cost spay/neuter opportunities to Douglas County. We know of one mobile spay/neuter veterinarian who plans to add Douglas County to their rotation, and we are hopeful another will be able to visit our community a couple of times each year as well.

This could make a HUGE difference for our community cats and the growing number of unwanted kittens.

The only way we are going to get ahead of cat overpopulation is through prevention. That means getting cats fully vetted, especially spayed and neutered, so they aren't continuing to produce litter after litter.

Every kitten born means another mouth to feed, another cat that needs medical care, and another home that must be found.

But change doesn't happen with rescues alone.

Change starts with all of us.

When we choose to bring an animal into our lives, we are taking on a responsibility to provide proper care, veterinary care, vaccinations, and spay/neuter.

If we all do our part, we can start breaking the cycle.

🐱 Spay. Neuter. Vaccinate. Be responsible.
🐱 Prevent the next unwanted litter.
🐱 Help us build a healthier future for the cats of Douglas County.

The solution starts before the kittens are born. ❤️

Mesa County Animal Services announced on Wednesday, Sept. 24, that it will provide local pet owners with low-cost spay and neuter vouchers for a limited time, thanks to grant funding from the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund.

With the voucher, a county press release said the sterilization service will only cost $25.

Partner veterinary clinics will provide the actual services and vouchers, which will be available in a limited quantity. The county press release said locals should first confirm availability by contacting participating clinics:

■ All Pets Center

■ Arrowhead Veterinary Hospital

■ Cottonwood Veterinary Hospital

■ Grand View Animal Hospital

■ Orchard Mesa Veterinary Hospital

■ Redlands Pet Clinic

■ VCA Tiara Rado Animal Hospital The press release added that vouchers are valid from Sept. 28 to April 27, 2027, and “issuance of the vouchers is entirely at the discretion of each participating veterinarian’s office.”

Pet owners must also provide proof of current rabies vaccination at the time of the spay or neuter procedure. Animals without the rabies vaccine must obtain the immunization, which the voucher doesn’t cover.

SCAM-tuaries or SANCtuaries. Shocking to think that along with the domestic kitties in need of rescuing, the wild ones need our help as well. To learn more on how to advocate for wild cats... https://wildcatsanctuary.org/how-to-be-an-advocate/ and right here in Colorado we have an incredible SANCtuary.. The Wild Animal Sanctuary https://www.wildanimalsanctuary.org/animals

😿 What to do if you see animal exploitation? If you witness something you consider animal abuse, report it by using this form or emailing the USDA at [email protected]. They’re in charge of regulating and enforcing the Animal Welfare Act. The more they hear from you, the more likely they are to send out inspectors to investigate. It’s the “squeaky wheel” concept.

If you accidentally end up at a SCAM-tuary facility where you see something that isn’t right, snap some pictures (if it’s safe to do so) and file a report on the APHIS website. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/contact/animal-welfare

You can also submit concerns to your local law enforcement agencies, as well as your state’s agricultural department to ensure all agencies are aware.

🐅 What about at zoos or circuses? PLEASE Don’t support circuses that still use animals in their performances, period. When public attendance drops, so do their profits. As we’ve seen, Ringling Bros. finally made the switch to animal-free circuses (and doing well), so you can make a difference simply by refusing to attend.

Before you visit a zoo or sanctuary, do your research. Check to see if they’re accredited with either the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries https://sanctuaryfederation.org/find-a-sanctuary/ or the American Zoological Association https://www.aza.org/find-a-zoo-or-aquarium before you visit. Many call themselves zoos or sanctuaries who are actually SCAMs.

If you’re considering visiting a facility you’re unsure about, you can view all inspection reports and enforcement actions for the last 10 years on the APHIS website using their Animal Care Public Search Tool to see if inspectors have made any comments. https://aphis.my.site.com/PublicSearchTool/s/

Easy links for you to speak out on behalf of animals being exploited or abused. You can be a voice for the voiceless with one simple email.
