Central Nebraska Humane Society CNHS is an open admission shelter. CNHS is the largest nonprofit 501(c) (3) animal welfare organization in a lead role in central Nebraska.

Our mission is: To protect, enrich, and advocate for the lives of animals and the people who love them through compassionate care, meaningful connections, and community partnerships across Central Nebraska. Established in 1967 and celebrating over 50 years of service, the Central Nebraska Humane Society is still located at the original site donated by Herbert and Barbara Glover. CNHS is governed by a Board of Directors whose members establish the policies, operation guidelines, strategic planning and fundraising for the organization. All donations and financial support goes directly to impacting the lives of animals in a positive way. Much of the funding CNHS needs to care for animals comes from the generous support of local donations. Currently, the CNHS staff is developing new programs including comprehensive animal foster care and dog training programs as well as revamping its volunteer program. Development of these new programs would not occur without the generous financial support of area donors. To date, CNHS has adopted to over 70 counties in Nebraska and over 30 states.

The hearts of our staff and volunteers are broken this week, as we had to say a sudden and unexpected goodbye to our sweet man, Tim Tam yesterday.

We had loved and cared for Tim for 481 days. He was an older boy but always had a love of life and loved spending time with humans. He was a calm and patient dog who was the star of many volunteer training and media outings. He was one of those dogs that no matter how long he waited for his forever person to come adopt him, he never lost his spirit.

Over the weekend Tim collapsed and was having difficulty breathing. We rushed him into emergent vet care and after tests were completed we were told he had Metastatic Lung Cancer. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to help him cross the rainbow bridge peacefully but sadly he did not make that that long, and passed on his own. He spent his final moments surrounded by our staff members who loved him.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who loved Tim and made an effort to give him time out of his kennel for extra walks, play time, and attention. Thank you to our staff who day in and day out cared for Tim. He spent well over a year in our care and because of that he started to feel like he belonged to each of us. This is not the reason we wanted to see his kennel empty, but we are thankful he is not suffering and is enjoying a life free of pain over the rainbow bridge.

If you feel called to make a donation to help us cover the costs of his end-of-life medical care we would be grateful. Donations can be made in person, over the phone, by mail or through our website. Thank you to each of you as our community for helping us care for animals like Tim. This is a heartbreaking situation for all but we are so honored that we had the privilege of caring for Tim where he was warm, safe, loved, and never went hungry.

Shopping for a cause? Now that's our kind of retail therapy!

This Thursday, October 22nd, our friends at are once again giving back to the animals at CNHS! 10% of ALL sales made at the GI location will be donated directly to our organization.

Whether you're refreshing your fall wardrobe, getting a head start on holiday shopping, or just treating yourself (because you obviously deserve it), every purchase helps support the animals in our care.
