Have you ever watched a dog fence run at a passing car, or lose their mind barking through a car window? That’s very obvious barrier reactivity in action; a physical wall standing between your dog and what they want to reach.

But what about the physical barrier we hold in our own hands every day? A standard 4 to 6 foot leash can trigger that exact same frustration.

Your dog might be social off-leash, but the moment you clip them in for a walk, greetings turn into a lunging, barking nightmare.

Here’s why:

Blocked Intentions: Our leash physically stops our dog from reaching their target (another dog, kids playing, fun toys, etc.), causing their mental threshold to boil over.

Pressure Without Direction: When tension builds on the leash without clear obedience expectations, your dog doesn't get clear direction for their behavior, and that confusion breeds more frustration.

Lack of Balanced Outlets: A repetitive 15-minute walk on a tight lead offers very little mental fulfillment. Frustrated dogs need the balance of controlled freedom (like exploring on a long line) paired with reliable obedience to satisfy both mind and body.

If your dog is struggling on leash, remember: it’s rarely out of nowhere, and it’s often frustration rather than aggression. The best part? Frustration is something we can help fix! 🐾 Let’s Talk About Resource Guarding: Why It Happens & How to Prevent It 🐾

Ever wonder why your dog growls over their food bowl or hides under the couch with a stolen sock? 🧦

Why does it happen?

Resource guarding is actually a normal survival instinct! Inherited from their wild ancestors, it's a dog’s natural drive to protect what they value (food, toys, spaces, or even people). While natural, it quickly becomes dangerous if left unchecked.

How to PREVENT resource guarding:

If your dog is currently happy to share, keep it that way with these safe at-home habits:

🟢 Play the "Trade Up" Game: Never just sn**ch an item away. If your dog has a toy, swap it for a high-value treat/reward. Teach them that giving things up means getting something better!

🟢 Add Value, Don't Take Away: When your dog is eating, walk by and toss a high-value treat/reward into their bowl, then keep walking. Teach them that human proximity means good things are added, not taken.

🟢 Incorporate Hand-Feeding: Feeding meals directly from your hand builds a cooperative relationship. It establishes you as the source of good things, eliminating bowl-related conflict early on.

🟢 Respect Their Space: Let your dog eat in peace. Placing your hand in their bowl constantly doesn't teach them to share, it often just creates unnecessary worry about their valued item being taken away.

🟢 Teach "Leave It" & "Drop It" Safely: Teaching these obedience cues incorrectly can inadvertently trigger major conflict over a prized item. It is always safest to build these foundational skills under the guidance of a professional.

🚨 IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE 🚨

Prevention is easy, but reversing active resource guarding takes precision, especially if your dog is resource guarding you or places in the home such as the bed, couch, table etc. If your dog is already stiffening, staring, growling, snapping, or biting over items, do not attempt to fix this on your own. Punishing the behavior or trying to "force" them to submit can cause severe escalations and injuries.
If you are already seeing these warning signs, your family's safety is the priority. Let’s tackle it together safely!

Introducing the cutest little fluffball ever, Derby!

I'm thrilled to welcome this sweet boy to our private in-home lessons. Derby is 12 weeks and is currently working on his foundational skills in the comfort of home!

We believe the first foundations such as desensitizing grooming, introducing new surfaces, and building engagement all set our puppies up for success in obedience later!!

Today we're working on tethering, an essential skill that helps young dogs learn the art of doing nothing.

Physical fulfillment + mental challenge = A happy and stable dog 🏆

For the high drive and athletic breeds, a simple stroll around the block just doesn't cut it.

They need activities that don't just tire out their muscles; but also satisfy their minds. What is your favorite way to give your dog a "job" to do? Let me know in the comments! 👇
