Changes at Coulee Pet Care in '26 - and, what about a local animal shelter?
~a newsletter~
Hello good people,
Warm wishes for a Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a happy new year!
You know, the popular songs call this "the most wonderful time of the year" -- and I for one love to get into the holiday spirit.
That said, it's also quite literally the darkest time of the year -- and a difficult time for anyone navigating loss; family, work or money challenges; and seasonal depression. Whether you are celebrating, struggling, partying, grieving, worshipping, or all of the above: I wish you all the good things this season has to offer. Moments of genuine joy, warmth and connection. May the lengthening daylight signal brighter times to come for our Coulee-Nespelem community!
On to business news ... and there's a couple biggish announcements for 2026:
Boarding Blackout: Jan 21 - Feb 3
I'm making an extended visit to my parents, family and friends next month. It is time! Doggy daycare and boarding will be closed for these dates, to accommodate travel and post-travel recovery. Kali Jo will be available for in-home/drop-in visits for your pets during this time. Let me know what you need.
Boarding/Daycare Changes: No new referrals!
Cutting to the chase: For several reasons, I am pausing intakes for NEW clients for boarding and doggy daycare. (Current clients - I can still host your dogs outside of blackout dates!)
Why? I personally suffered two physical injuries this year that required medical attention from breaking up dog fights, most recently three weeks ago. And, three dogs have likewise needed medical treatment from fights this year. I love the work, but these incidents have been not only scary and painful, but frankly, expensive!
In an effort to evaluate safer options I am scaling down this service in my home.
But that's not the end of the story.... and you have a part to play!
These last 2+ years have proven a need and a market for safe, local, and reasonably-priced boarding and daycare services in the Coulee. Kali Jo wants to, but is not currently setup to provide these services.
Here's what it gets interesting. A separate, but related, urgent need is a local animal shelter/rescue. A place to hold and care for lost or stray animals in the greater Grand Coulee area, to reunite with owners or be fostered/adopted. Animal welfare, public safety and public health all demand it.
What if we could take care of both needs?
Land/building for a small 501c3 animal shelter, with a separate area on the property for paid boarding and doggy daycare? Boarding could either be operated by Coulee Pet Care (renting space from the 501c3) or directly by the 501c3, to supplement revenue for the nonprofit mission and keep the costs to clients reasonable in our rural community with a small customer base.
THIS IS NOT A PROPOSAL. But, it is the inklings of a vision built through conversations over the last year. Including with the founders of Okandogs (established, well-run dog rescue out of Cashmere, with connections to Grant County Animal Outreach) about what it takes to get started and keep going, AND a local elected official keen to earmark city animal control funding to support a central place where police officers could bring lost/stray pets.
What next?
Right now: Enjoy the holidays! Make the most of your time off if you have it...do something for a kiddo or elder in your life. Give a stranger a reason to smile. Rest.
Early in the new year I'll send out a link to gather ideas, connections, informal pledges (for 501c3 feasibility planning...not a strict commitment), and other ways to help turn this community need into a reality, and make a difference for local pets and communities in 2026.
I will spend the next month drawing up a plan that will allow us to explore next steps. If this is a passion of yours, get in touch with me! We will need board members, volunteers, donors, brainstormers: you.
Thank you for reading this far, and for your support, trust and understanding. May we all be lights for each other in 2026.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Renata Rollins
