Spinach's memorial garden has just bloomed into something so magical.
I'm still amazed at how well its done for the first year.
Next year it will be even bigger and cross your fingers and send good thoughts, because we have the next phase of the greenhouse grant happening next week.
Hopefully we are granted approval so we have move forward with the "Forever Spectacular Pollinator Project".

Let’s talk about this pretty lady, Ms. Bella.
When she first arrived last winter she was quite reactive. She didn’t enjoy any attention, didn't enjoy other pigs and would defend her area. Overall she was kind of grumpy.
That's fine- we understand all these changes are stressful.

We give her lots of space, time, good treats and slowly but surely started with a quick head pat, maybe a back scratch here and there and look at her now. She relishes in ALL the attention and

Apparently sunflowers are very tasty 😀

🌻 Happy Friday, friends! 🌻

It’s been a Friday filled with thunderstorm after thunderstorm around here!
Of course, our #1 concern is always the animals, and we’re happy to report: animals are good, humans are good, and structures are good. And really, that’s all we can ask for. ❤️

The only casualty so far has been one of our BIG patches of sunflowers. 🌻😭 They all toppled over, whether that was from the wind, the rain, or their soggy roots, not quite sure.

It was definitely a bummer, but around here we are going to make lemonade out of lemons. Or apparently, photo shoots out of fallen sunflowers. Our first participants were Maizy Mae and Rudy Tooty, and as you can see, Rudy was an exceptionally cooperative model. 😉 (Just kidding.)

He thought the entire set was a snack time!!

So we’re cutting the sunflowers back, taking full advantage of them while we can & then getting busy on our next project: turning this whole patch into a milkweed meadow.

We’ll be planting lots and lots of milkweed seeds, and the timing actually works out pretty perfectly since many native milkweed seeds benefit from spending winter outside in the cold before germinating in spring.

So maybe those sunflowers weren’t ruined after all. Maybe they were just telling me it was time to get busy on the next project and to get a move on!

Happy Friday, everyone! We hope you and yours have weathered these storms safely. And as much as we may not love the storms, the earth sure did need that rain. Stay safe out there friends!

Dinner was delivered in bed, so everyone is happy and warm and dry.
We hope everyone is safe and unscathed from this crazy weather!

They sent Deputy Pam’s new uniform over for a fitting, and would you just LOOK at her!

It still needs a couple little adjustments before it’s officially ready for duty, but we have to say, she’s looking pretty snazzy!

Deputy Pam will be back in full uniform and ready to report in no time (and geez Louise do we need her with Rudy Tootie running amuck!)

Looking sharp Deputy Pam! 👮‍♀️

Ok- today is a better day than yesterday (so far, its not over but knocking on all the wood!!!).
Drove in to see this hooligan just walking down the driveway (now even here he is still secure, this is just not pasture or animal area, its human area) and this song has been my song to him all week, I've finally put it to paper.

So here is Rudy's song sung to the tune of the great Johnny Cash's "I've been Everywhere"

I've traveled every road on this farm man,
I've been everywhere, man,
All across this farm, man,
Slippin’ through gate, man,
Teaching goats habits, man
I've been EVERYWHERE!!!!!

I’ve been to:

Big pigs, little pigs,
Italian pigs, old pigs,
Furry pigs, pink pigs,
Piggy Parlor, BIG pigs,
Sassy pigs, sleepy pigs,
Duck coops, chicken coops,
Emu Island, turkey troops,
Sheriff Paul, Deputy Pam,
Patrick wondering where I am,
Lieutenant Parker, Lieutenant Preston,
None of them have learned their lesson,
Drain Commissioner Linda too,
Chief Communications Officer Noodle,
WHEW!

I've everywhere, man,
I've everywhere, man,
All across this farm, man,
Nobody understands, man,
How I fit through there, man!
I've EVERYWHERE.

I’ve been to:

Goat school with
Bradley Cooper, Ethel, Spike and Cleo,
Ricky, Wanda, Lulu, Esther, Lucy,
Artichoke and little Maizy too man!
Baby Sprite, Big goats, small goats,
Old goats, tall goats,
Teaching every single goat
How to squeeze through SMALL HOLES!

I go everywhere, man,
I go everywhere, man,
Teaching them my habits, man,
Leading escape plans, man,
I’m the smallest one here, man,
But I go EVERYWHERE.

I’ve been to:
Old horses, small horses,
Big horses, Ponies, mules and Cushing’s horses, blind horses,
Jonah, he’s a spicy one!
Jack and Diane,
Old hens, young hens
Phineas, P***y,
Rocky, Nadia, Granite & Fernando the mullet man!
Tiny Cow & Benny Boo Man.
Watch out for Big Dom man!
Loud guy Carl, Dolly Doo, Toula Too, Mama J, Baby Frankie Man,
Frodo and Bill man!

Because here comes Rudy Tooty Man!

I go everywhere, man,
I go everywhere, man,
Across this whole darn farm, man,
Causing some alarm man,
Teaching goats bad habits, man.

I've been EVERYWHERE............

We have some very sad news to share tonight.

At dinner time we noticed that our sweet Annika was struggling to get up. She was in great spirits as usual, and still very interested in eating, but when we took her temperature, it was incredibly high. Between that and her reluctance to rise, we knew something wasn’t right, so we loaded her up and rushed her to the emergency vet at MSU.

Sadly Annika did not come home with us tonight, and we had to say our final goodbyes to our sweet girl.

X-rays showed that Annika had fractured her back tibia, almost the exact same injury our llama Dahli suffered many years ago. We discussed every option. Surgery with plates and pins was possible, as was amputation, but given Annika’s age, arthritis and other age related issues, neither was recommended or likely to give her the quality of life we wanted for her.

After talking through all of the options, we realized that the kindest and most loving thing we could do for Annika was to let her go.

There was no accident that we know of. She had only been with her best friend Rocky. They believe she may have simply stepped wrong or twisted her leg just enough to cause the fracture. Sometimes, especially with our seniors, it can take so very little to cause an injury such as this.

We are heartbroken. Annika had only been with us for a short time, and we sure wish we had been given more of it. We wish even more that we were bringing you better news tonight.

But we are grateful that for the time she was here, she was safe, she was loved, she had her best friend Rocky beside her, and Nadia nearby and when she needed us most, we were able to make sure she didn't suffer.

Goodnight sweet Annika. We sure wish we could have loved you longer. ❤️

We have been so blessed to experience this beautiful friend on the farm this summer, and today I discovered her egg sac. ❤️

It makes me a little sad knowing she won’t be here to watch her babies grow, but there’s something so special about knowing she chose our little piece of the world to leave behind her legacy.

What a beautiful reminder that even the teeniest of lives leave something wonderful behind.
